I don't think I've ever realized how actually far left (or at least far Democrat) this board is. Really shouldn't surprise me since it is a pearl jam board after all.

I'm not discounting the material or other reasons it's become so difficult to have kids (though I definitely disagree with some of your reasons, especially disempowering our spy agencies!). And I agree with you that attempts to turn back the clock are doomed to failure, but I do think attitudes are at least somewhat influenced by the media we consume. It's interesting that it's practically unheard of in modern media to see that portrayed positively, or portrayed at all. I know it's been ingrained in many people's heads (including my own) that it's wrong to have kids in their early to mid 20s - to say nothing of the near-taboo of having them in your teens - but is that really something people should be instilled with?

It's all too little too late to me anyway, if there was ever a solution in the first place. We are just going to have to deal with it. I don't think making the government our new nannies is much of an answer.

Geoffrey Miller is a pro-polyamory psychologist with an open marriage, for the record. So I don't think he fits into the traditionalist mold.

Some of what you are saying though isn’t people thinking it’s wrong to have kids in their twenties. It’s young women deciding not to be tied down to a family but rather live life the way they may enjoy it prior to settling down with a family. That’s the part that is traditionally from a conservative religious view, i think.

The defensiveness here in response to what I thought was a fairly benign tweet seems to tell a different story. It's like the idea of someone having kids early is not just impractical given the world we live in, but is morally wrong to even think it's ok. And maybe a lifetime of media telling you its so horrible is partly to blame!

My general feeling was that most people here were left leaning, but fairly moderate or mostly non-political. Lately I realize you people actually support a lot of the insane shit in the progressive/SJW threads. That's on me!

I’m not arguing it’s morally wrong! There’s still millions and millions of people that want to and do start a family young. I just think that in the rise of women’s equality over the past 50 years or so, there are more women that want to experience life a little before having kids. I don’t think either is right or wrong
