Yeah. How does that make you feel about the state of "journalism"?

It's a field that was totally upended and is still trying to figure out how to right itself, and lots of companies are taking the clickbait route since that's the only way that has been shown to reliably make money.

Every time I hear some lame argument about how the “media” is trying to indoctrinate people or whatever, I can’t help but roll my eyes. These are businesses, and these days there’s so much competition for my eye balls. It’s all about the $$.

Burt's right, the most popular news station on tv and most of the top websites you see referenced on social media are driven by right wing ideology as much as profits.

Have you ever listened to fox news radio? It's literally selling you stuff every other sentence.

And by stuff I mean freedom.

I end up moving the tuner through it when getting to another station.

Anyway I found this interview interesting. His view is that the Dems actually have a deep bench for future elections, sourced primarily from governors who’ve managed to win purple states. I like how he never minces words. I’m sure we can find criticisms of all this but he’s probably not totally crazy.

I sat across from him a few weeks ago on a commercial flight from Detroit to Harrisburg. He was casually chatting with the girl next to him about 70's soul music. I have no idea why he was there.

Some reckoning thoughts. In 2016 I didn't get it. In 2020, I started to. These days I'm almost there. I wonder of there are more ex-dems like me who can help change the party or else not be afraid to find a home in a third party.
The key to understanding the Trump era is that the real divide in America is not between left and right but between pro-system and anti-system politics. Pro-system politics is the bipartisan consensus of establishment Democrats and Republicans: It’s the politics of NATO and other military alliances, of trade agreements, and of deference to economists (as when they say that price gouging isn’t the cause of inflation). Trump stands for no fixed ideology but rather a general thumbing of the nose at this consensus.

The main fact of American politics in the post-Obama era is that an ever larger majority of Americans are angry at the status quo and open to anti-system politics. Trump won as the candidate of anti-system anger in 2016. By 2020 he suffered the liability of being the status quo even as Covid was ravaging the world. But by 2024 he was able to return again as the voice of change, bolstered by the fond memories many Americans have of the economy under his presidency —and of the temporary, but generous, expansion of the welfare state under Covid emergency measures.

...

Democrats will need to radically reform themselves if they want to ever defeat the radical right. They have to realize that non-college-educated voters, who make up two-thirds of the electorate, need to be won over. They need to realize that, for anti-system Americans, a promised return to bipartisan comity is just ancien régime restoration. They need to become the party that aspires to be more than caretakers of a broken system but rather willing to embrace radical policies to change that status quo. This is the only path for the party to rebuild itself and for Trumpism—which without such effective opposition is likely to long outlive its standard-bearer—to actually be defeated

Seems like a prime opportunity for someone to step up right now and seize the reins. It sure isn't Harris or Jeffries. They ain't got it.
