This is definitely something I have always really liked about this group -- they're a bit less cerebral than other modern piano jazz trios, with tunes shooting straight for the pleasure centers and often employing harmonies and scales that feel a bit more pop than jazz. In that way Cowley reminds me a bit of Vince Guaraldi -- also an artist whose songs I often find myself wishing went on a bit longer.tragabigzanda wrote:it’s surprisingly ear wormy
Also, I've got to circle back to this and say thanks for this suggestion -- it's awesome. It wasn't until I looked these guys up in more detail that I realized that this was a side project of drummer Joe Russo, who was in Furthur (a post-Jerry Garcia iteration of the Grateful Dead), and now leads Joe Russo's Almost Dead (which is basically a high-profile GD cover band). I know that stuff draws a decent crowd on the jam band circuit, but man -- I hope he does more stuff like this!tragabigzanda wrote:Hell yes. Selcouth Quartet, currently touring the US.
