Is Ed even a good singer?
I love the guy, and every time I hear an instrumental or a demo with just his voice (especially from the early days), I just melt. I genuinely feel that Eddie has one of the best voices of his generation, one of the best screams, pure passion and vulnerability. At the same time, I feel that in Ten, he was an amateur singer, and his gut wrenching scream was mistakenly considered good technique. Also, there was all that pressure. Ten feels like an album where the guy is trying to earn his place and constantly proving why he's good. There's a little story right there. That gives me a clue as to why Ten still the favorite of the bros and dudes, and sometimes the perfect example of cock rock, because raw power and fierce are mistaken for developed potential. Over time, Eddie would abandon this style and find his true voice, when he no longer had anything to prove to anyone.

It’s definitely… inimitable. The voice. Seems to rub some people the wrong way, but I love Eddie in his prime.
Keep on rockin’ in the free world.

Re: Is Ed even a good singer?
Ed later abandons the cock rock vibe, and in Vs. he starts with his nasal tone, then he moves into where he sounds like a sheep (according to my girlfriend), then a more introspective style in Binaural, and finally, super sexy and kind of Brian Johnson like in Avocado.
I think that's why PJ ends up being so fascinating. They use imperfection to their advantage.

I like her, she's cool
Ed was a great singer, and now he's an older guy with a decent voice that carries a band who deserve the place they have in rock history

i think the more interesting question, which you also raise, is which ‘era’ of Ed’s voice is his true one. Does he have one?

He's still a good singer. I just think a lot of Pearl Jam songs are difficult because he used to have so much power and really used it as much as he could.

I've always assumed the 2000-ish Ed was the closest to proto Ed.stip wrote:i think the more interesting question, which you also raise, is which ‘era’ of Ed’s voice is his true one. Does he have one?

1998 Ed was the perfect Ed
he could sing all the old stuff

Much of the music I love comes in the years following, but I think 1994 is peak Ed voice.
Still harnessing the power of the yarl, but in a most pleasing manner.

i would also accept 1994 Ed
as Dave A blessed Ed's voice with beautiful well-conditioned shine and balance, just as Dave's hair did to the stage

I don't think he really changed his style much over the years. It's more that his actual voice changed due to the wear and tear of live shows and the smoking.
