THIS JUST IN FROM THE 10c...
Dear, Jamily it has been brought to our attention that some of you are of the opinion that Eddie doesn't have a good voice or at least are not sure. Some have stated that you aren't sure if he has a real voice.
Make no mistake continued discussion in this thread of any opinion other than Eddie at least being the best of his generation will result in your removal from the Pearl Jam multi verse.
This will be our last word on the topic.

Re: Is Ed even a good singer?
I can't speak to something like overall range, but for me a good singer is whether or not the singer can elicit a sustained emotional response. Obviously that's subjective, but the answer for Ed (for me) has always been yes - and when he's on more than just about anyone. And this is true up to the present day. Would I respond differently if I was 15 years old hearing 60 year old ed? Who can say? But that Ed's voice has evolved and changed doesn't undercut that ability to create an emotional connection. Michael Stipe, Tom Waits, Mark Lanegan, and Tim Booth (rounding out my top 5 singers) have all lost power or range, but not resonance.
This has always been my personal issue with Chris Cornell. Of the big Seattle 4 (5 if you include Lanegan) he undoubtedly has the most impressive range. But of those five singers i've always developed the weakest emotional connection to him. The range was almost a distraction. At least for me.
And yarrll Eddie remains my favorite Eddie.

I saw Shakira live a couple nights ago and thought of Ed several times.

Ed was amazing the first ten years then a slight decline over the next ten years and then he picked up a new tick and I can't handle it. I'm out! Layne was the best singer from that peer group. I think it's an easy choice. He had the range and could bring it live every night.

I think I put all the records where he's trying to hard below the ones where he's not. Though trying too hard may actually be his natural self. That said, I'd like to add that I think dark matter is my favorite of the records he is trying to hard.

it's just impossible to be objective about early pearl jam for me, so it's always interesting when someone has a different opinion

ranking eddie vocal eras
Ten era eddie
vs-vitalogy era eddie
gigaton-dark matter era eddie
riot act era eddie
lightning bolt era eddie
Backspacer/ST era eddie
No Code -> Binaural era eddie
i might flip the bottom two. I could also see DM being its own era, and Gigaton/Lbolt being combined

Based on this order, I have to ask if you even like music. Or singing. Or even life itself.stip wrote:ranking eddie vocal eras
