I think it might stick for me. I was really engaged. Excellent performances. Incredible score. And it's gorgeously shot. Feels like a crime that it isn't nominated for Best Cinematography.

i liked it enough but the Cinematography felt too tv-ish for me. I was surprised they could use all those real backdrops and i really cant remember much after two months that i saw it.

I kinda felt like a very by the numbers approach to it, and i would have killed for a more creative one.

Substance over style VG

These are people that wear silk slippers and silk underwear.
You don’t need to go all laa dee dah with the camerawork. It would be overkill.

aesthetic are everything to me in terms of filmmaking.

And the thing i did loved about Conclave was that it didnt took itself serious. Its a very campy pulpy mystery dressed as a church drama. Thats the best thing of the movie in my opinion.

Of course, Finnes and lithgow are great too.

Conclave's real aesthetic strengths are in its wide shots, which are uniformly gorgeous and use lighting in creative ways to comment on the story and characters. The close-ups and two-shots can be a little drab and sometimes even underexposed. Still head and shoulders above most of the stuff we see on the big screen these days.

Yes, there were at least a few wide shots that looked so good I had to pause the movie so I could admire them.

they mostly look good because of the location.

Oliver Stone puts it better:

¨My only quibble is, to get access to the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel, etc., and then light it so dimly was a disappointment¨

Roger Deakins also said:

¨RM opinions about films are mostly a travesty¨

im curious about the last part though...my recent films all looked incredible...Anora, The Monkey, Nosferatu, stuff like Smile 2 or Joker 2...Im about to see The Brutalist in the theatre mainly because of how it looks.

Continued my Corbet acting journey with a small role in Thirteen and leading role in Simon Killer. I was pretty underwhelmed by both, though there's no doubt he was a very talented actor. I wonder if I should watch Childhood of a Leader next, to finish his directorial work.

Watched Runaway Jury this afternoon and now I'm watching The Replacements. Not Hackman's best, but I've never seen them.

Tomorrow night I think I'll watch Mississippi Burning.

I watched that one a little while ago. Good movie, and looks amazing, but it's crazy how they fully refused to give a single black character anything resembling a personality.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

The Replacements is extremely corny and stupid, but an hour in I'm kinda loving it.
