Peter Green and other underrated guitarists

Post by lvc »

After watching a Sturgill Simpson rig rundown and him mentioning that he had his guitar tech mod the neck pickup of his '62 Gibson to get a Peter Green sound, I decided to flip the magnet on the neck pickup of my SG and loved it.

So this led me naturally to start listening to Peter Green recordings and wow. That guy was something else. I never thought I could like Fleetwood Mac, so color me surprised. Here's a good example of Green's excellent playing.

Aside from appreciation for Peter Green, what other guitarists fall into the underrated category?

I'll throw another out: Roy Buchanan. I found out about him when Martin Scorsese used his version of Sweet Dreams to close out The Departed. He seems like the kind of guy that, if he'd managed his depression and connected with the right front man, could have become a household name. Sad story. Great player.

edit: if you like guitar playing and don't know Buchanan, follow that link to watch on youtube.

Jack Pearson. Was with the Allman Brothers for a while. Studio cat in Nashville. If you’re into guitar players look him up. You won’t regret it.
Let me tell you, Homer Simpson is cock of nothing!

Dean Ween. At face value he might seem like a silly lil guy, and I guess he is, but the dude can also shred.

His playing is great, but I find early blues Fleetwood Mac tremendously boring regardless. Especially Jeremy Spencer re-making the same Elmore James motif over and over and over again.

"Then Play On" and the singles that surround it (Oh Well, The Green Manalishi) are fantastic and it's where he and the rest of the band hit their strides. But then he burned out. It was a very brief window unfortunately.

Highly underrated, like any musician who dares to be funny.

You wouldn't believe the pigeon hole.

Suddenly any musician or band with a sense of humor is in your ballpark.

Dumbass fans think you're all friends and influenced by each other and they can't differentiate.

And critical geniuses think you're a dirty version of Weird Al Yankovic exploiting shock value.

Been there, seen it.

Wow what a dumb take
My mama always says stupid is a stupid does. But you said dumb so I don't know what to do.

Anyway, though, but I find him a bit of a quandary. On recordings he's often amazing. But live I am almost universally grated by his jagged phrasing and generally herky jerky sound. The difference between Impossible Germany on the record and Impossible Germany live pretty much sums it up.

Peter Green is often called the best of the English blues. BB King stated Peter Green scared me. I don't think he is underrated
Danny Kirwin was he played with Green in Fleetwood Mac. In My opinion he had the best vibrato I have heard.
I also find it a bit funny how many people slam Buckingham by saying he's no Peter Green. Peter Green was a great great blues player but he couldn't hold Lindsey Buckingham's bag of coke.
Lindsey get a bit shafted because he is essentially a pop guitarist, but my god try learning Never Going Back Again, Big Love, Tango in the Night or Rhiannon played the right way with the bass notes over the top of the riff. You will run back to the 12 bar blues

Christopher Cross was a great player
Terry Kath
Nokie Edward a true pioneer and legend, but sadly much forgotten
Taylor York I really like his work on the last Paramore record
Jessica Dobson listen to Eyes are Red great solo

I think Nels is one of the best electric guitarists to have ever done it but I have no knowledge of his Wilco stuff.

Stephen Malkmus. Is he underrated? I dunno, but he’s a great guitarist.

Underrated might not be the correct word because ball don't lie. Maybe it's just lacking wider name recognition.

Corgan makes sure we talk about him enough, he does not need the guitar playing props.
