Trump exempts large numbers of Mexican products from tariffs

Bad News:

Trump intends to wind down Department of Education

Exempting products from tariffs isn't good. That's one of the biggest problems with tariffs: rewards political rent-seeking, gives the government more ability to choose politically favored winners and losers. Companies that can flatter (or worse) Trump the most will get to wield the tariff power to bludgeon their competitors and consumers.

To be clear: I'm against tariffs. Full stop. But if you're going to have tariffs it's better that they be fully equal across the board without any exemptions or loopholes.

I think the reality of the situation is doing an effective enough job communicating that sentiment that Trudeau would have to say it.

Not that he ever would. That would be a very dumb thing to do. Explaining things to him like he's a child is good enough.

Lot of that happened in Canada too. Companies are preemptively laying people off ahead of Trump pulling any shit. Canadians are fuckin furious with him.

Oh dear God. He’s gonna hit us so hard when our PM goes to the White House next week for paddy’s day. Ireland has a €50 billion trade surplus with the US and Rubbio was in the phone to our minister of foreign affairs about it the other day. And he wasn’t happy. Our Taoiseach getting slapped around the oval is going to make the Zelenskyy incident look like a love in.
