Good album, shitty production

Post by Jorge »

What is an album you love but you think sounds awful? Whether it be from the mixing, mastering, or other production decisions?

I love the last three Hüsker Dü albums but man, they sound pretty bad. It's all high end, no mids or lows, and the snare sounds like a small wet thud.

Maynard James Keenan, who I think has always had fantastic production on his albums, told Rick Beato he thought De-Loused in the Comatorium had shitty production. Said he liked the songs but couldn't believe how bad it sounds.

What the hell?

Many would say sturgill Simpson's Sound And Fury, but I think it's fine, even though I'd like to hear a cleaner version one day.

Almost none of the orchestra on Sgt Pepper’s works for me. A Day in the Life being the exception. I don’t care for the way they used horns on their songs other than Got to Get You into My Life.

I was listening to Sonic Youth's official boot from Moscow '89. That thing sounds like cardboard. I think they were singing into guitar amps. Great set, though.

Does Psychocandy count? Is the overkill reverb what makes it great? I literally feel that album in my chest, neck and temples when it's on at full volume but the songs are so catchy and the sequencing flows.

I've always thought that Terry Date's sound worked well on Louder Than Love but Badmotorfinger deserved better.

Or maybe BMF just sounds of a piece with most other rock records from 1991-92 and we have to live with it.

Sky Blue Sky always sounded out of step with the production of the couple records that came before it and after it.

Just read that most of the album's songs were recorded in a single day. I'm not surprised - the songs themselves are lovely but they are let down sonically by what seems like a need to veer away from YHF and AGIB style arrangements and studio care.

Most SST albums sound very thin. Husker Du, Screaming Trees, Soundgarden's Ultramega OK, Black Flag, Meat Puppets...

Dischord Records or Sub Pop records from the same era sound soo much better.

Wild! One of my favorite sounding albums of all time. WTA is the one that feels sonically out of place, it was recorded pretty hot.
Hah, I equate it to the Pumpkins' Adore, whose production similarly drains me of the will to live.
