How do we not have a general purpose Ramones thread?

Definitely an all-time favorite band for me. Road to Ruin may be my favorite album of theirs.

'Road to Ruin' is my favourite too, though I'm relatively unfamiliar with the band's 80s/90s output (I'm planning on working my way through them soon).

It's a mixed bag, but I really like most of it. I posted this a couple days ago, about some of the neglected material of their post-Tommy years. I think you'd like "Born to Die in Berlin" if you haven't already heard it.

PS - I wasn't sure what to expect, but the Ramones Museum in Berlin is definitely worth checking out.

Saw the Doc the otherday after a long time; it was even funnier.

Great moment with Johnny barely saying what he felt with Joey`s death.

My dad raised me on classic rock, and I'm glad, but the Ramones were one of the first bands I discovered on my own. Love them so much. Listening to Commando right now.

seriously how the fuck did they pull these live shows off? They rip through 20 songs in 30 minutes with literally a "1,2,34!" count off between every song. You dont even have time to think about what song is next on the setlist.

Its quite remarkable really.

Its quite remarkable really.

By the end they were playing way too fast, to the point where every song was an indistinguishable blur and to the detriment of a lot of their more melodic tunes (especially because poor Joey can barely keep up a lot of the time).

Don't get me wrong, I love love love the Ramones and really wish I could've gotten to see them live, but those 90s shows were absurd. I get the feeling Johnny bought into their "loud and fast" reputation way too much and pushed it to absurd extremes.

I can see that. Im listening to Alive II today and its just insane. Yea, the songs blend together, but its not really about them being indistingushiable except for their REALLY good songs.

I still dont know how they did it. I suppose that is where the militaristic johnny shined.

Funny you mention the "one two three four"

I’ve been thinking about something that’s always kind of puzzled me. Normally, in most bands, a count-in serves as a tempo cue, and everyone comes in right on what would be the “five”, it’s smooth and immediate. But with the Ramones... and I feel like this is especially noticeable in the CJ years... they sometimes do this odd thing where there’s a slight pause after the “one two three four” before the song actually kicks in. Like:

ONETWOTHREEFOUR! … (pause) BAM!

It’s subtle, but once you notice it, it feels like they’re not coming in right after the count, but waiting just a tiny bit longer than you’d expect. You can hear it, for example, at the start of this live video

Huh, that is weird!

I can only guess it played more of a ritualistic role than a functional one (at least in terms of tempo) after a while.
