Just gonna note that in the mega stack of Neil Young albums, Mirrorball is probably somewhere ranked between 10-15 for me. So it doesn’t work in either direction.

I can't imagine it being any higher than 15, and without making a list myself even that feels a bit generous. I like the album (I like all of Neil's albums, more or less), and PJ (especially Jack) plays great on it, but I don't think it's among Neil's better batches of songs by a long shot. IMO only "I'm the Ocean" is an all-timer, with most of the songs just being the kind of two-chord stompers that Neil could write in his sleep. Not that that isn't enjoyable in its way, but I certainly wouldn't trade No Code, Yield, Binaural, and Riot Act for more of that.

It's a good rocking album and it has a great feel, but I wouldn't give up Pearl Jam's entire post-Vitalogy catalog for more albums like it.

Mirrorball is an interesting album in the sense that Neil's previous record (Sleeps With Angels) was probably the most weirdly eclectic record he ever made with Crazy Horse. Then he hired Pearl Jam and they basically made their version of a Crazy Horse album -- simple songs, straightforward garage rock, massive guitar sounds. Then he brought it all back home with Broken Arrow and Year of the Horse.

That whole '90's run was pretty awesome for Neil.

No Code is more than a little Sleeps With Angels-esque, when you think about it -- has anyone from PJ ever discussed a connection? I know Ed sort of mentioned Sleeps with Angels when he inducted Neil into the RRHOF ("some of his best songs are on his last record," which I think was SWA at the time).

Smile really is though. It's an obvious Young homage musically with lyrics taken directly from two Frogs songs (albeit via a note). So my theory is that it's a double-lifted tribute to both.

If you listen to No Code, Yield, Binaural, or Riot Act, you can go a loooooooooong time and never listen to Johnny Guitar at all. Forever, even.

Listening to Dume, I just love how this album sounds, specially bass and drums. I mean Neil´s guitar always sounds good and this one has groove and separation too.

Great mix. Of course all of the Zuma tracks are classics.

Mirrorbal is top 10 NY for me. Looking forward to this live album.

But can I make a complaint here? Im really really losing focus on his archival releases. It's a mess. Sure he labels everything just fine. But he is releasing official bootlegs that are not officially in the archival boxsets. He releases archival albums as stand-alone. Through his subscription he releases more live albums. He re-releases his official albums in boxsets, but somehow he skips his Geffen era.
