Entire genres that only need one thread #1: "Jazz"

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Glad you like it!

Cowley has had an interesting career — his trio/solo stuff is consistently great, but he also has had a relatively distinguished career as a session player, including on some of Adele’s biggest hits (“Chasing Pavements,” “Rolling In the Deep,” etc.)

Hmmm…the CD liner notes just list the members of the trio on piano, bass, and drums, but a lot of the solo stuff that Cowley has done since their last trio record is pretty loops/FX based, so I am guessing they’re his doing?

This is definitely something I have always really liked about this group -- they're a bit less cerebral than other modern piano jazz trios, with tunes shooting straight for the pleasure centers and often employing harmonies and scales that feel a bit more pop than jazz. In that way Cowley reminds me a bit of Vince Guaraldi -- also an artist whose songs I often find myself wishing went on a bit longer.

Also, I've got to circle back to this and say thanks for this suggestion -- it's awesome. It wasn't until I looked these guys up in more detail that I realized that this was a side project of drummer Joe Russo, who was in Furthur (a post-Jerry Garcia iteration of the Grateful Dead), and now leads Joe Russo's Almost Dead (which is basically a high-profile GD cover band). I know that stuff draws a decent crowd on the jam band circuit, but man -- I hope he does more stuff like this!
