We are talking about the legend Chris Cornell writing a song in tribue to his friend Andrew Wood, and now both are dead. Seems a weird criticism. But I do wonder why he chose to name it that way. Maybe something directly related to Wood.

To be clear, I don't think the use of the number 2 instead of to contributed to either untimely death.

Sometimes I marvel at where Temple of the Dog slots in Cornell's timeline -- I like early Soundgarden a lot but the idea that he released these formally beautiful, poetic, elegiac songs ("Say Hello," "Reach Down," "Call Me a Dog," etc.) into a world that had only ever heard Ultramega OK and Louder Than Love is pretty amazing, and something that I think is easy to miss in hindsight. These were massive leaps forward in his songwriting.

I like "Swallowed Whole" okay, but...easy vote for me.

Even compared to something like Badmotorfinger there is a depth of sensitivity in these songs (and Seasons). I don't recall the timing between TOTD and Badmotorfinger, but I wonder what happened (and if maybe it was the eventual success of TOTD - which didn't break until pearl jam did) and the Singles soundtrack that gave him permission to lean into this at least a little bit on Superunknown

TOTD was recorded in Nov-Dec 1990 and released April ‘91

Badmotorfinger was recorded Spring of ‘91 and released October the same year.

I’d say at least some of both projects were written around the same time.

Well that's not true. It just isn't a good song. Riot Act mixing/recording/production wouldn't change that.
