Dramatically reducing almond production in the US is a good thing as it takes ~1 gallon (3.8L) of ground water to produce a single almond. Huge waste of limited environmental resources in California.

Most of the board will hope the world their families live in collapses so they can win internet points.

I am not in any way afraid to be wrong in public. People who think the point of an argument is to win have failed to realize that the point is always to learn.

But you can’t learn from an argument while holding back your actual thoughts. You can’t learn from an argument without information sharing. And as I have said, I would like nothing more than to be wrong on this particular topic. I can’t tell you how relieving it would be, to look back two years from now and think “wow what an idiot.“ That’s a utopian future, son.

So especially if you think that I am wrong, I would welcome your response to the question as posed. I would read and consider your thoughts.

Is there actual evidence of a reduction in the quality of foreign students applying to US colleges and universities as a result of Trump's actions in the last 60 days?

I understand that the point of this is that we can’t know yet whether or not a thing is going to happen. And forget 60 days…the most impactful stories on this front are maybe 2 weeks old. But first of all, this was a forward facing question. It was about what you think might be true about the future.

And this is a situation that is still ramping up, not down. The number of immigration and detention stories that come out in the next six months will far, far outnumber the ones we have already seen. How do you expect people in other countries to respond, if not in their own self-interest?

We could get into all the other reasons they might not come here: visa delays, for one. Or, the loss of federal grant funding. A huge number of PhD students, international and otherwise, depend on federally funded jobs as teaching assistants, research and project assistants, etc. to make their journey possible.

But it all comes down to: cause has effect. I don’t know why someone would look at all of this and think it won’t affect other people’s behaviors. Japan and South Korea are forming new economic partnerships with China focused on containing their economic exposure to us. This is how the world is responding to what they’ve seen so far, and they’re going to see quite a lot more.

I've got nothing to respond with. I suspect this is how it will end up unless things radically shift in the next couple months. The one consolation is that there appears no real significant 'success' in Trump's moves so far beyond killing off federal level DEI offices and basic border enforcement. Everything else appears to be smoke and mirrors. I've seen no one beyond MAGA really argue otherwise and I'm guessing that is why the rate of EOs has slowed down.
