Re: I Will Walk Into Your Garden ing Thread
Just learned that houston is split across two hardiness zones (9a/9b) and my zip code is in the good one. No wonder my grass is always more lush than my brother's on the north side of town.

Re: I Will Walk Into Your Garden ing Thread
Got some good activity in my raised bed garden to kick off the spring.
Sunflowers (wild)
Carrots sprouting
French Breakfast Radishes growing
Bitter Melon sprouting
Thai and Lemon basil (transplanted)
Birds-Eye Chili (transplanted)
Hot Banana Pepper (transplanted)
Various pollinator flowers lining the perimeter in cinder block holes
Thinking of buying a few grow bags and dropping some Bok Choy and lettuce seeds to see what happens. I've run out of room in the raised bed.
Pretty chaotic garden this year. Can't wait to see what works and what doesn't. Only thing I'm particularly worried about are the peppers with all that sunflower shade coming soon.
The sprouts I'm looking most forward to are from the bitter melon. Those seeds came from some grocery store fruit and I was surprised they successfully germinated.

My thinking is that if I put them in a grow bag, I can really troubleshoot sun and shade.
What do you think? Your stumbling block was with bok choy?

Re: I Will Walk Into Your Garden ing Thread
It may have been my veg garden soil last year. Most everything was smaller. Spent more time over the winter adding compost/manure to help get the soil ready for spring. My pickling cukes are already leaning on the trellises. I do an "up and down" trellis. They are planted at the edge of a raised garden, and the trellis starts along the inner edge next to the plants, angles up and towards the outside of the garden, then a sharp "V" down to the ground outside the garden. They like to crawl not climb, and this is the best method I've found.washing machine wrote:My thinking is that if I put them in a grow bag, I can really troubleshoot sun and shade.

Trellising is new territory for me. How do you get a vine started on the trellis? Is there twine or zip ties involved?

Re: I Will Walk Into Your Garden ing Thread
for squash type veggies, I've found they tend to naturally intertwine. when my cuke vines were tall enough, I just pushed the top of them behind one of the wires on the trellis, and they did the rest. Haven't done beans in a while but I know they do better with something to climb on as well.washing machine wrote:Trellising is new territory for me. How do you get a vine started on the trellis? It's getting to be that time. My wife spent over three hours at her favorite nursery the other day. Get that planting soil ready.

I have my eyes on some rare-looking outdoor succulents at my local mom-and-pop plant shop. I had almost bought and potted them last weekend and now I’m glad I didn’t. Not quite near freeing, but close enough that it would be a shock to the system for them. Here’s hoping next week I can get that going—and spruce up my herb garden. This is also the year for peppers, tomatoes, and green onions.

An acquaintance of mine from Nashville is planting a lot of the same stuff. Sounds like you're in the same hardiness zone?ZachJam wrote:I have my eyes on some rare-looking outdoor succulents at my local mom-and-pop plant shop. Bok choy and butter lettuce seeds were sown today. With a little luck, sprouts will rise on Easter morning. God bless them.
