And then after doing some searching, and generally finding Pat Metheny to be really interesting but not altogether moving, I took kind of a blind swing on this one after sampling a couple tracks and really connecting with the music:

Haden is such a great bassplayer. Metheny plays guitar really well, but like you alluded to, has no soul.

I love this album! I went through a big Charlie Haden phase around the time I watched the documentary about his life. This was one of my favorite releases of his, they play together very beautifully.

Another good one is Rambling Boy, a collection of folk and country songs recorded with friends and family. Totally different from anything else he ever did.

He played with Ornette Coleman for a while and the Liberation Music Orchestra. So he could get pretty out-there. But there's also a very gentle and warm side to his music. He was also the father of Rachel and Petra Haden, and father-in-law to actor Jack Black.

When “A Boy Named IF” came out, I loved it right away.
And I remember feeling not that in love with an EC album since “The Delivery Man”.
Also, the “Club Date” dvd helped a ton.
