OK, I finished my rewatch. Skarsgard's speech about sacrifice is WAY better than Marva's speech.

The speech at the end is so emotional b/c of the funeral and the people around it, but the words of the speech. Skarsgard all the way!

I'm sure no one here will be shocked to hear me say that I find the Skarsgard speech overrated. It's not bad, obviously, but it's pretty flowery and overwrought. From a pure writing standpoint, Marva's is way better. And from an emotional standpoint, Marva's moved me more. But, again, why fight about it? You like what you like. If it moves you, it moves you. Nothing wrong with any of that.

Now I hate the Luthen speech.

His speech is about selflessness and the responsibility of those with the power to act to do so. To build and lift up those who will make the same sacrifice for a greater future they may never see. A rejection of ego, idealism, and glory in favor of conviction. Like a variation on noblesse oblige... a nobility of conviction if you will. It's mirrored brilliantly from R1 with Galen Erso's plot, who makes the same choice not to react (like Lyra does when he is taken or like Marva's speech inspires), but to respond by a life dedicated to building a path to victory for the Rebellion, a response that inspires Jyn to do the same and ultimately leads to victory over the Empire. Luthen is to Cassian as Galen is to Jyn. This is the underlying theme of Andor and R1, that these personal and often invisible sacrifices are the foundation upon which freedom is built and make hope, particularly A New Hope, possible. Not twirly space magic, but conviction that in everyone is the power build the future. That's the real 'force'.

It's perfect and you were right to love it.

I liked it because it was defining for Andor. Ever since Rogue One he's been someone who became a horrible person in order to do the right thing.

Marva's speech could be slotted into any Star Wars. Luthen's speech could only happen with these people, at this time, in this place.
