Albums with a great back 40

Post by lvc »

I've been compiling a list of albums with a great back 40 (in case that metaphor doesn't land, it's the 40 acres in the very back of a farm so basically a closing run of 3, 4, 5 songs).

A Pearl Jam example for me is Binaural. The run of Of the Girl to the end is just so great.

An example from another band would be the last 4 songs on Sturgill Simpson's Sound and Fury or the last 4 songs on U2's Pop.

Thoughts and additions?

It's just the part of a farm you can't see from the porch, so I equate it in my mind to the side b of an LP or, in a world of CDs and streaming, the last handful of songs on an album. Where things can get a little wild but awesome.

How far back would you go. I'd definitely say Going to California and When the Levee Breaks. I'm not a huge fan of Four Sticks.

There's not a bad song on the record, but I'd argue the back half of Tom Waits' Bone Machine fits this idea.

"Great tail end"

"Great closing run"

What's this "back 40" shit? I'm so pissed off right now.

I've been enjoying these great back 40s of late:

NIN - With Teeth
MJ Lenderman - Boat Songs
Father John Misty - I Love You Honey Bear
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree

Four Sticks is baller. That odd time signature is badass and the riff is heavy and groovy at the same time.

Outstanding hindquarters on that bad boy. Easily the best part of the album.

yeah of course!!

Probably when i was 14? first Zep cd i got. My mom gave it to me. But its been a while since i listened to it, and recently i wanted to focus more on their latter albums.

I was just shocked on how relentless it is, you could say rock and roll is at its finest on that album.

Anger at what you don't understand is a pretty normal human response. Aren't you Australian? That would explain your ignorance of a rural american idiom. And your anger issues from what I generalize about Australians.

Listening today to Wake of the Flood, which ends with Eyes of the World and Weather Report Suite - that’s a great end run of an album - and while 2 tracks does comprise the entire second half of the album.
