Thanks, guys! I got into Pearl Jam after stumbling across them on Spotify while chasing that early ’90s alternative rock vibe. They snuck into a alt rock mix with Sonic Youth, Replwcements, Camper Van Beethoven, etc. It stuck out as “classic rock”y so I explored them more. My uncle had always talked about them but I never really gave them a chance. I can’t remember the first track I heard, but I know I gravitated to the early-to-mid stuff. Still exploring the later years.

This band is truly astounding. Songs that for decades I thought I didn’t care much about suddenly jump up and take control of my soul. In their entire catalogue there’s maybe 1 or 2 songs that haven’t had a positive impact on me at some point.
Every sentence in my head, someone else has said.

lots of great stuff in each era. they are a great band to explore by album chronologically just to see how they evolve and enter into conversation with their own body of workBlakeWB wrote:Thanks, guys! Right now, the Binaural/Riot Act era seems to be the most “out there,” with the exception of the crazy stuff on Vitalogy. It’s seeming like the later stuff is more conservative.
I’m also wishing that they did more spacey, acoustic stuff. It’s not that I like Pink Floyd, but something more long-form like that could be suitable for them. Especially as Eddie’s voice ages (albeit, not too badly), low-energy (or maybe just more deliberate) seems the way to go.

I actually haven’t heard those yet, or at least they’re not ringing bells right now. I was thinking of Sleight of Hand and Nothing As It Seems, in particular.
It would take the right producer to get that sound right.

Late period acoustic stuff tends to lean more into sentimental moments.BlakeWB wrote:Right now, the Binaural/Riot Act era seems to be the most “out there,” with the exception of the crazy stuff on Vitalogy. It’s seeming like the later stuff is more conservative.

Retrograde may have what you're looking for (it's on Gigaton)

You're in the right spot. I think a lot of folks here would love an EP/album of Cold Confession style tracksBlakeWB wrote:Right now, the Binaural/Riot Act era seems to be the most “out there,” with the exception of the crazy stuff on Vitalogy. It’s seeming like the later stuff is more conservative.

Thank you both—yes, Retrograde is definitely the vibe. And maybe a fan movement for this kind of material could influence the band. Stranger things have happened.

To me in order to cement themselves as the greatest American band, PJ has to tour more, while they still are capable of being dynamic. Their shows have very few people 20 to 35 who aren't there with their parents. Any good band is going to draw that kind of crowd. PJ is good and still capable of being great. However their meager tour schedule creates scarcity, keeping ticket prices high. When's the last time they were in Arkansas or New Mexico?

I don't think they have that aspiration, which is too bad. If they wanted that legacy they could make that case.Kalevi wrote:To me in order to cement themselves as the greatest American band, PJ has to tour more, while they still are capable of being dynamic. The last time I saw a reddit thread that asked "who is the greatest American rock band", the wide consensus surprised the heck out of me

I think I would judge PJ pretty harshly if they said their goal was to be "the best"stip wrote:I don't think they have that aspiration, which is too bad. its a very u2ish statement but in practice, with them being who they are, it would just mean more albums and touringepilogue wrote:I think I would judge PJ pretty harshly if they said their goal was to be "the best"stip wrote:I don't think they have that aspiration, which is too bad.
