So, I was just listening to a fascinating podcast about Wikipedia. They talked a lot about how the lead images on a page are selected. My question, Jorge, is did you submit that Tom Waits photo that was used on his page? Or did someone else submit it?

In 2007, Tom Waits came to Buenos Aires and was interviewed on stage at an old theater downtown. I was there, and I got a kick out of the idea of Tom's image on this page (that would be the "canonical" picture of Tom Waits on what is effectively the encyclopedia of the Internet and would be viewed by millions) being from an event I attended. So I uploaded a pic of the event.

Shortly after that, one of the Wikipedia editors asked me whether I owned the rights to the photo (since Wikipedia needs the picture to be released under a Creative Commons license), and I lied and said yes. I didn't own it. I took the photo from some press outlet. I was a foolish 19 year old! For years that was the official Tom Waits photo, and I may have bragged about "being the one who took it." (disgusting lies!)

Many years later I noticed the picture had been changed. I dug into it and found a looooong and detailed debate about the previous picture, with people voting on whether it should be deleted or not! Someone did some thorough detective work about where it actually came from, and there was even forensic analysis of my own user history with people hypothesizing about why I would claim to own the picture. I was a somewhat more mature adult by then so I was mortified. I even left a comment apologizing, even though the debate was long over by that point.

So to answer your question, yes I did submit the old picture, but I did not own it. I lied about it, and it has since been changed to something else.
