Of the first five albums, Ten, Vs, Vitalogy and Yield always felt like they belonged to the world writ large. No Code always felt like it belonged to me. I can’t explain this feeling but I still sort of feel that way.

it was their first insular/inward sounding record. No Code, Binaural, Riot Act, and Gigaton are the only ones, really

it is interesting how subtle-y No Code is actually a very rocky album

Red Mosquito
Habit
Hail, Hail
Lukin

these songs all nuke

which offsets the belly-dancing of Who You Are

If Red Mosquito was the lead single the world would think about that era of PJ much differently

that is 30% of the songs and 24% of the total run time.

which is actually almost the same amount of run time the excellent trilogy of Sirens, Sleeping By Myself and Future Days take up on No Code’s spiritual successor, Lightning Bolt. Though those songs are more a logical extension of Smile and Around the Bed them Habit and Lukin. Strong evolutionary connections to Hail Hail though

took a bike ride today and listened to No Code

the complexity lurking in the background is impressive throughout

so soulful

triumphant even

but clouded in conflict
