Just kidding, I love REM. But I remember hearing someone call them that and it really made me laugh

The Grateful Dead are great for a lot of reasons. Friend of the Devil and Box of Rain are beautiful songs. But comparing them to maybe their most direct contemporary, I more enjoy listening to the Jefferson Airplane.

I’ve said this before but my objective list of nominees would be:

The Allman Brothers Band
The Velvet Underground (their status as American could be debated)
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
CCR
REM

Unless The Beach Boys count because then there’s no need for a list or discussion.
Every sentence in my head, someone else has said.

REM is great, but I think sonically they’re a bit niche for “greatest American rock band” — missing that broader sense of definitiveness in overall sound I find myself wanting from an attempt to streamline an entire genre into a single band.

For what it's worth I think the thread where reddit crowned Green Day was restricted to currently active bands

I mean REM moved in a lot of musical spaces but besides stipe’s voice being iconic there was a signature guitar sound that I think is generally associated with REM. I mean Leatherman is indebtted to it

:haha: more like The Who or Zep. but Pearl Jam can't compete with the stipe/mills vocal combo.

REM totally has a signature sound; that is what I was saying, that I think they are too much their own thing to really embody “American rock music” in a general sense.

PJ, by comparison, have things about them that make them unique, but they also embody a lot of common rock music tropes. You can learn, musically, about a lot of different styles of rock music by listening to them.

Not sure if that’s an important criteria or not, but that is where my brain jumps to.

i get that. pearl jam is an amalgamation of their influences in a way that REM is not. its why they are maybe the best band of their stature at covers

Did anybody ever hear or read anything about why Pearl Jam stopped touring with opening bands for a while? It seems like they've gone back to it and something they always seemed to believe in, but it was a weird stretch there where it stopped. Did Jeff have some tax problems and need to raise some extra scratch?

I would assume it’s because they were doing 3-hour, 35-song shows and they still had to be done before the local crews went into overtime.

Wease is correct

There’s a thousand shows but we never talk about that Berlin one from 96 enough. It was broadcast on radio. Remember that one being really special. No code tour. Jack in full effect.

Didn’t know where to put this but Rick Beato interviewed Jeff and Mike. Should be on YT soon.
