She was extremely damaged (repeatedly raped by her father in childhood -- what do you think that does to a person?) and spends most of the film in a cycle of self-destruction. She rejected Forrest when he proposed not because he wasn't worthy of her, but because she didn't think she was worthy of being with someone like him. So she leaves and tries to become worthy.

She didn't try to take advantage of his wealth or hide her kid from him. Forrest was out running for years without a fixed address or phone. She kept up with him through newspaper clippings, but had no way to contact him until he was settled back in Alabama. When they finally reconnect there's even a line hinting that she had written him some time ago ("I got your letter" "I was wondering about that!").

This isn't as memable as "Jenny bad, Jenny evil drug-addled gold-digging slut hehehe" but seems more fitting with the film's story and themes
