Unwound - Extremely good, I was right up against the stage at what was a small venue, had a nice chat with the drummer after the show
The Pixies - Iconic songs performed flawlessly, they sounded huge
Pearl Jam - My eighth time, giant stage production, I was surprised by how energetic they still are on stage

yeah it was crazy to see them in 2018 in terms of energy and then 2022 was even more intense.

My last couple of shows fall on opposite ends of each others spectrum.

Benjamin Booker live at the Soda Bar.
Standing at the front row at a tiny intimate venue, the tour kickoff show for Benjamin Booker.
Tons of feels. The new album sounds great live, it will surely sneak into my top ten for the year (which is off to a slow start). Notably challenging to squeeze in songs from previous albums.

Cake, The Pretenders & Sublime at BeachLife festival (day 2).
Arrived a bit late to this one and just missed the Susanna Hoffs set while parking.
Pretty cool festival experience overall, considering most festivals these days are pretty draining. We were drawing comparisons to Ohana all day. BeachLife wins over-all organization. We had free goodies in our free tote bags within the first 20 minutes. Ohana gets bigger crowds and bigger lineups though.
Cake was my highlight (I've loved these guys forever). Festival crowds are not a good fit for Cake, they played great, but to a crowd with a pretty lukewarm participation.
Renewed respect for Chrissie Hynde. Rock royalty. Exceeded my expectations by a mile.
Sublime was weird for me. Same kind of weird when listening to STP without Scott. Both singers replaced by sound-alikes but in Sublime's case with far more heart (father-son swap). Still weird though. Left early to jet outta the parking lot.

Hard Quartet - 8/10, was wonderful seeing this mix of musicians performing their new record together, my first time seeing Malkmus was a big W
IDLES - 10/10, this show could not have been better, they were amazing and basically every song was a home run
Flaming Lips - 4/10, a giant spectacle but only one original member (Coyne) made this a bit of a let down no matter how much confetti was in the air
Osees - 9/10, not the best Osees show I've seen but pretty close, they never miss
Fontaines DC - 8/10, some of the song selections were a bit sleepy but they're growing as performers
5,6,7,8s - 7/10, a fun nostalgic show after seeing them initially in 2004 (a short six months after seeing Kill Bill 1)
MJ Lenderman - 9/10, this guy is the truth if you dig Neil Young, Jason Molina, etc, I won't skip any future Lenderman shows
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - 7/10, impressive Australian band with a terrible band name
GUM & Ambrose Kenny Smith - 8/10, front row so I could see a Lizard Wizard from up close (worth it!)
Death From Above 1979 - 7.5/10, they performed their first record without acknowledging the crowd but then talked heaps between songs after that, much preferred the second half

No, they're quite expensive, but this is my 2025 output so far. Not bad for four months, I guess.

Deep sea diver
Hold steady
Nick cave - top show of my life
Sturgil Simon - awesome! Even though I don't know a majority of his catalogue, the show was incredible. His band rules.

Also the difference of crowds between cave and Simpson was hilarious. Cave are my people. Super attentive.

Bone Thugs n Harmony. Glad I went but it wasn’t a great performance. But so much nostalgia that it was still fun.

Sadly for me Wayne Coyne and four session musicians with a bunch of inflatable robots in tow doesn't compare favourably with the last time I saw the Lips.

Got to see The Weather Station play last night. They’re one of my favorite bands in recent years. I found out about them on RM when someone posted the video for “Robber.” It was a small show with maybe a couple hundred people in the audience and they played most of it being only back lit. While I wish they had gone deeper into their catalog, it was a really good performance. “Robber” “Humanhood” and “Parking Lot” were highlights. Great band.

I'm a fan - would jump at a chance to see them live. Glad you saw them and supported them.

Just got back from day 3 (I missed days 1 and 2 and Strat apparently) of the Minnesota Yacht Club festival.
At 5:50, I saw Garbage. I only know their second album, but I’d never seen them before and they were great. Shirley is bad ass.
Sort of watched Sublime from many hundreds of yards away. Bradley’s kid sounds just like him, but all of their songs except Santeria sound the same to me.
At 7:50, I saw 311 for the first time. I’ve always loved Beautiful Disaster and Amber. What a great live band they are. I can see why they have such a dedicated traveling fan base. Tons of energy and they sound just like the records. Their lead singer defies aging. I’m not gay, but my God!
Green Day headlined. I’ve only seen them once before - a festival on the Nimrod tour. They’re not my cup of tea, but they’re still a very good live band.
It was a beautiful night in Minnesota. 2025 and I’ve seen Garbage, 311, Gin Blossoms (and sort of Sublime) for the first time, and they were all great.

You Am I - 8/10, they played their two best albums in full, one of which is one of my favourite records of all time
Supergrass - 8/10, had a whale of a time at this show, they were in very fine form, played all their best songs and Gaz's voice doesn't seem to have aged a bit
DIIV - 9/10, left this show extremely impressed and hungry to see them again, they sound huge and their attention to detail in terms of the visual aspect of the show was outstanding

I am still laying low after last year’s huge shows, but got to see the Ryan Cohan Quartet in Chicago, and also saw Rumours ATL with the 8 Track Band - both 70s cover bands (the former a Fleetwood Mac tribute) -if the name of the game is fun, those latter 2 bands brought it. Ryan Cohan and his group were fantastic, and the first time in a while I was in a serious jazz club.
