Me and Reid and Other Cool People Play Magic the Gathering

Post by Simple Torture »

I’ve started playing Arena daily again, and I’m getting washed with the most recent standard starter decks. Haven’t found one that works for me yet. Hoping to just earn enough wild cards soon to make some kind of fun dragon deck.

I started back in August and it is a lot of fun. I’ve bought stuff from Bloomburrow, Foundations, and Tarkir Dragonstorm. My daughter and I like to build decks and she keeps beating me.

I don't really understand what this is. It's kind of like Pokemon?

Nah it's more like Yu-Gi-O or whatever. Pretty cool. I never played it because it's already a hundred years old with thousands of cards, but I do get the appeal.

Also, that dude who got banned from tournaments/conventions for taking photos next to countless exposed buttcracks was hilarious. Pretty sure that was MTG.

Great thread idea. I'm taking the advice of reddit and completing quests in Arena for now just to get my bank and XP up. Jump In games are great for that too.

I want to enjoy Blue Decks and have been playing them a lot for quests, but I'm best with Green decks so far...which still isn't saying much. Today I got an opponent down to 1 point without them touching me and I still lost. They had a massive block card that I couldn't remove. Need to focus on collecting more remove spells.

IRL I'm still collecting LoTR, Tarkir and Thunder Junction cards. Final Fantasy cards are coming out soon and I'm stoked. At 42 years old with a robust family and work life but uneventful social life I'll probably never play the paper game. It's still fun to collect cards and I hope this thread becomes my haven for that.

Played a lot about 25 years ago. Used to travel around and go to tourneys. Can't believe it's still going. Jeez, that was a long time ago.

I can't wait until this thread hits its stride and we start getting heavy into rare land cards.

I’d also suggest looking into Foundations. It’s about half new cards and half reprints, so you’ll be able to get a lot of staples in there. I had great luck with boosters and got 2 of the 3 most valuable base cards in the set. I also like Thunder Junction a lot—I’m only missing like 25 cards from the base set, most of which are $10+ cards, and I’ve found it difficult to justify spending that much on one piece of cardboard. The most I’ve spent on one card is probably in the $5 range.

Not too well? Looks like nothing in the entire set is worth more than $5.

heh, it was very unpopular at the time too.

Wish I had held onto those 4x Revised Dual Lands, though.

This land is nothing much, but I'm really into it. I pulled a foil version in a recent pack and immediately tucked it under my Nissan's driver side sun visor.

Worzel felt the telltale prickling at the back of her neck; her domain was being challenged! It’s someone old, she thought. Someone I know… Thomil! It had been a long time since he had challenged her. Quickly, she called her vassals into action. She would need much mana for this duel, much indeed.

The last time Worzel fought with Thomil, he had focused on the destructive magic of the mountains. It had been a close fight; she still saw in her nightmares the brigade of firebreathers that had pushed her to the brink of submission. Since then, Worzel had learned from a specialist in white magic that there were ways to protect herself from the raw force Thomil loved. Unfortunately, the white magician had been unwilling to part with the knowledge in exchange for her offered artifact; she had been forced to coerce it out of him in other, more violent ways. It took a while, but she was a far more experienced duelist than he, and in time he was forced to yield what she sought.

Worzel soon found that gathering the proper mana for her protective spells was going to be difficult. She needed the mana of the countryside, and disturbances in the ether were preventing her from making the necessary psychic bonds to any of those lands. She had precious little to draw on in the first place,

so it could take a while before she managed to get a link to the plains. Just having the knowledge to protect yourself isn’t enough, she thought. Well, let’s see if I can’t stall him with my friends of the forest in the meantime.

Worzel resisted the temptation to invest herself in blue magic, in case the rumor that Thomil had taken to raising serpents had any truth. Now she began to regret the loss of the Glasses of Urza, which might have given her some clue where the focus of his attack would be.

Thomil countered her creatures with a legion of undead. Black magic, she thought. Thomil! I wouldn’t have expected that from you. Thomil had always enjoyed displays of pure power, but she had regarded him as a relatively clean fighter. At least, cleaner than most.

A sudden sense of horror came over Worzel as she felt a large drain on the mana plane— an enormous drain, accompanied by a stink of sulfur and the grave. Something big was coming.

Learned some new tricks since we last met, eh? muttered Worzel, under her breath. Well, so have I, dear Thomil, so have I.

It was going to be a tough fight.

I did what I alluded to above and crafted a ton of cards to make a brawl deck featuring one of the Tarkir dragons as my commander. It’s this beefy fella:

Image

The deck is fun to play with IF I can ramp fast enough; if I don’t have 5-6 lands by turn 4, I can be cooked if the other guy is playing anything aggressive. It’s fun when my opponent has a bunch of tokens and is banking on them overwhelming me and then I throw down my commander and am just able to wipe them all out. I’ve won a bunch of matches as soon as he hits, people just walk away. But if I only average 1 land per turn, I run into big trouble. I bet this would be a ton of fun in a 4-person commander match, I’m gonna let it hang around in case the commander app ever gets off the ground.

I don't know if I have the patience to craft a commander deck. We're just playing kitchen table standard right now.

I bought some packs a few weeks ago, and my daughter opened up the Ugin planeswalker. Haven't seen him in action yet.

If you wanted to give commander a try on a budget, there are some cheap starter decks you can buy. Here are two that are around $20:
