Doom

Bored to tears by the Dark Ages’ early campaign “missions” that are just lazy, open world arenas.

Surprising. I’ve only heard good things. I’ll be checking it out after Clair Obscur.

Admittedly, I'm still very early in the game and the combat itself is solid. I'm a fan of the shield.

When Hugo referenced this being the "biggest Doom game of all time" and "open world" elements, alarm bells immediately started clanging in my brain. Giant, open-world arenas versus carefully planned and tailored campaign missions aren't very fun in a PvE game, generally.

It hasn't grabbed me in the same way as 2016, but I'm finding it better than Eternal. 2016 was the sweet spot for me, one of my favourite FPS's, period.

Rolled credits on Dark Ages. It ended up decent but the middle stretch of missions had me pretty bored. Too much tedious crawling of big, open world levels with minimal narrative and character interactions.

And I forgot to mention there are major audio mixing issues throughout the game. Dialogue, music, sound effects are fighting to be heard and at seemingly random (and different) levels from moment to moment. Really breaks the immersion.

And, of course, no longer having Mick Gordon doing your music is a big deal. The soundtrack was fine but nowhere near that caliber.
