Going to see the best stage actress alive right now (Audra McDonald) in Gypsy tonight.

I'm so excited! I've seen Audra before and she's always perfection.

My grandmother took me to see a production of Gypsy at the KC Diner Theater when I was a kid. I'm sure that emotions will be high tonight, and I can't wait! Fuck! I love theater.

Thanks, bud. Hopefully I can get in next week or the week after.

I'm going to Connecticut tomorrow to see Mamie Parris in Ragtime.

So, that'll be awesome.

Was able to attend the invited dress rehearsal for Call Me Izzy last night. It's a one woman show starring Jean Smart. First preview is tomorrow night.

Since it was a rehearsal, you could tell some stuff was a little off. They're still tightening the pace and transitions. But I'll tell you, Jean Smart is every bit as nuanced and captivating and brilliant as we've come to expect.

Some screen actors really falter on stage. Live theatre is a different beast. But Jean is electric. She's a real national treasure.

Well, this was…

It wasn’t out and out terrible. Some aspects were. The guy playing Doc Brown kept playing him like a Jim Carrey character with the voice inflections and body movements. It was NOT good. And the guy playing George was doing a lot of the same things with his voice it was awful. The dude playing Biff was the best of them all. He did a wonderful job. Marty was ok. Lorraine was good.

They changed practically everything that was set in 1985. Well all the details, anyway. The plot points were hit, I guess. Marty goes to Doc’s in the morning; band tries out; he and Jennifer walk around and get the clock tower pamphlet; supper with the family/Biff needs his report; meets Doc at night; goes back in time. But none of the details around any of that were the same.

Most of the stuff in 1955 stayed the same. And what was changed wasn’t distracting and you stayed in the performance.

Some of the songs were just bad. A couple were actually quite good. The sets and pieces wher phenomenal and the Delorian pretty much stole the show.

Oh, no Einstein.

We may have enjoyed it more if we weren’t so familiar with the movie. There were more from our age group in attendance with prob 20-30 year olds next. That group had an absolute ball. They were whooping and hollering at all the right places and just loved it. Our group just thought it was ok for the most part. As it was, I got to spend the day with just Mrs Wease and that was worth it all.

I saw it on Broadway and kinda hated it. Except for the "Earth Angel" scene where the theater filled up with bubbles, that was kinda nice.
