here is a question, Jorge. you say pearl jam is unusal in that the first album eclipsed everything that follows. Its certainly true of Ten. But is what makes Ten/pearl jam unusual is that it defined a band that went on to have a 30+ year career that was as prolific and successful as they were.

take ten out and look at the rest of pearl jam’s career and it is still impressive (ignore whether it would have happened without Ten). But Ten still looms over it all.

that feels more unusual. who else falls into this category?

Haha, this thread was basically a way of covertly advertising the Pearl Jam episode of my podcast where we try to figure out the signature song of various artists. http://signaturesongpod.com

I think I probably did a bad job articulating it but this is closer to what I meant. There are plenty of musicians who have ONE album that rules above all in terms of public consciousness. But there are few that are still left with a notable career if you remove that album.

For general public...
Gold - Alive
Silver - Even Flow
Bronze - Better Man
Jeremy deserves mentioning as it was huge in 1992/93 but I don't think it's maintained its "top dog" status. Daughter and Small Town are also "big deals."

For relatively-hardcore fans who are trying to objective but don't want to include the above songs...
Gold - Corduroy
Silver - Black
Bronze - RVM
Honourable mention to Given To Fly.

I think the "real" hardcore fans would then start bringing up songs like Release, Immortality, the Go/Animal combo, In Hiding, and songs like Present Tense and In My Tree (and maybe even Hail Hail) from No Code. I also feel like Do The Evolution and Porch deserve a mention but I think too many individuals think they are a bit overplayed at the live shows.

Not what I asked you and didn’t ask your life story nor do I care about your podcast.

I just asked could I be on it.

Shout out honorable mention to Yellow Ledbetter. It's popular enough with the casual dum dums, and it's also ground zero for Ed's garbled lyrics.

The crooning baritone. The stratocaster heroics. The looks. The personality. It's got it all!
