Everything about this post is the same for me, except my current feelings about them. I could respect them for giving up at this point, frankly.Brainof23 wrote:I always look at this thread and think, "what are people bitching about?"
I guess when it comes to Pearl Jam, it just isn't in me. I have too much appreciation, respect, and just blind undisputed love. I hate to rank the albums because I don't want to admit I have a least favorite. I hate to rank the member because I admire them all for different reasons.
They have been there since I was 11 years old and growing up in a classic rock family they were the first band that was mine. My Dad had Rush, Triumph, Bad Company, LZ, ect. I love my Dad for teaching me about so many great bands. Pearl Jam was my turn.
I consider myself a blessed fan. I have been to 69 shows. My first was in 1996. It was my first time ever in the brand new arena in Buffalo. I went by myself. $150 bucks. Every dollar I had in the world.
I think of these things...
1. I've been to 3 PJ shows in my hometown, PJ10, PJ20, Benaroya, Borgata, St College 03, 6 shows at MSG, the last 2 at the Spectrum, and have seen every song on an album except All Those Yesterdays
2. I met a lifelong friend at the Columbus 00 show. I have been able to take both my brothers, my mom, my wife, and my best friend to shows. I got to take them to my peak and experience the moment with them. Black with Mom was one of the best moments of my life. I went 0-21 before I heard Release. I took my baby bro to his first show in 2005. Picked him up after his 3rd day of high school and we went to Toronto. His first song was Release. He is like that. He does remind me my first song was Oceans.
3. Any time I have needed Pearl Jam they are there. My senior year of college I almost died. Just a month or so after I got back from Benaroya my appendix blew up to pieces. I was in the hospital for 21 days or so and listened to Pearl Jam all 21 days. I got better (ended up with Crohns like MM) got back to school and had to go to Boston in 04. First song, release. You can't make that up.
This is all over the place I guess. My version of general PJ bitching. It's just not in me I guess.
If you ever need a PJ apologist PM me.

Thank you for sharing. I don't have nearly as many visceral stories as you but I've gotten so much from PJ over the years, and the scale is so heavily tilted in their favor, that it is hard for me to really get too worked up over some of the minor things that some people get upset by. There are times things that band does frustrates me a bit, and they are far from perfect, but I've gotten so much out of them that I just kinda shrug my shoulders. I'm still ahead. Maybe I'm lucky in that the active contribution already happened, and so now new music is like catching up with an old friend, rather than the formative experience itself.

Birds in Hell wrote:For what it's worth, I wouldn't necessarily interpret criticism of Pearl Jam as being less of a fan. I get far more out of being critical of artists or bands that I really enjoy than I do from ragging on things I'm just not interested in. I'd rather pick apart which songs by Pearl Jam don't work for me and try to figure out why than only stick to heaping praise on things I think they knocked out of the park - that isn't to say I don't enjoy the latter too, but I don't find it as enlightening or engaging a discussion.
I am the same way. I sometimes get annoyed at the somewhat petty tone of some rote and reflexive criticism (which can come across as immature and rude-not just to the band, but to the people who care about it), but that's not really what you're describing above.

Re: General Pearl Jam Bitching
Lowlight79 has made mega-mixes of past tours, listenning to all boots and then selecting his 'best' version of each song played, compiling them all into mini-concert-like sets, and then doing all the fiddly work of perfectly joining songs/fading etc etc.Fuzzcharger wrote:Hang on. I have the 2000 tour mix (split between Europe, NA I and NA II), the 2003 tour mix (a beast indeed), the 2006 tour mix and recentlyish the 2008 - 2010 tour mix which is discussed at the linky below.

If for the rest of your days these mixes were the only PJ you had available to listen to it wouldn't be the end of the world. Great stuff indeedy.

I might PM to see if any of these are still on active torrents anywhere.
I've generally stuck to complete shows for boot sin the past with the occasional mix but these look rad.

Sounds exciting Brad. I actually went back and got Gems and Preternatural after posting here and am listening to Gems right now. There's some really great high energy versions on there.
