It certainly looked cool.epilogue wrote:I'm not sure those are even the stupidest things in tros.Monkey_Driven wrote:Let's rank the top 5 stupidest things in SW. The Death Star wreckage dagger and "somehow, Palpatine returned" are definitely on the list.
The dagger is super cool.
"Somehow" never bothered me. I think it's weird how that's turned into a thing.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

"Somehow, Palpatine returned" is one of the stupidest lines ever uttered in movie history. The stupid dagger is bad, but par for the course in lazy Abrams SW.

Re: Let's Actually Watch the Movie: Return of the Jedi
The line is totally fine. Especially in context. No one ever wants to include the lines that follow it. And it's what's someone would say in that situation.
The problem with the line is the delivery. Oscar clearly thinks it's stupid and that's why everyone else does.
But in the text of the film it's totally fine.

Please explain how the context and previous lines justify that lazy, idiotic, insulting-to-the-audience (let's face it, the audience probably deserves it at this point) line.

Re: Let's Actually Watch the Movie: Return of the Jedi
The line is there for the same reason that Palpatine is: because Bob Iger and a team of execs decided that it would sell more tickets, and because they thought (rightly, it seems) the audience was too stupid to care why or how he was crudely shoehorned back into the movies, because these "filmmakers" are nihilistic hacks who don't give a remote fuck about art.
"We need an old name to bring back to sell more nostalgia tickets. Bring back Palpatine!"
How, sir?
"i don't give a fuck. Just put a line in there about him being back. it does not fucking matter lol"

I just watched the "somehow, Palpatine returned" scene again. The best part is the little sigh he does before saying the line

It didn’t help that Rian killed the big bad in the second act.BurtReynolds wrote:The line is there for the same reason that Palpatine is: because Bob Iger and a team of execs decided that it would sell more tickets, and because they thought (rightly, it seems) the audience was too stupid to care why or how he was crudely shoehorned back into the movies, because these "filmmakers" are nihilistic hacks who don't give a remote fuck about art.

Killing off Snoke and Luke at that point of the story made no sense to me.
Especially knowing Carrie Fisher died whilst they were editing the film.
I love Palpatine but the story is a mess after that.

Not entirely fair on Iger. It was Abram’s made the decision nobody else.
And to be fair to Abram’s, one of the most beloved elements of non screen Star Wars were those graphic novels and books where Palpatine did indeed have a host of clones of himself ready to go should anything happen to him. (Think they were called splinter of the minds eye? Graphic novel. One of them) so Abrams was mining a deep vein of much loved Star Wars lore.
He just completely fucked up the delivery of it is all.

Re: Let's Actually Watch the Movie: Return of the Jedi
I'm not here to apologize for Bob fucking Iger, but all accounts I've read seen to indicate the opposite of true. JJ washed Palatine back, not Disney.BurtReynolds wrote:The line is there for the same reason that Palpatine is: because Bob Iger and a team of execs decided that it would sell more tickets, and because they thought (rightly, it seems) the audience was too stupid to care why or how he was crudely shoehorned back into the movies, because these "filmmakers" are nihilistic hacks who don't give a remote fuck about art.

I'm surprised more fans weren't amped to see a rough adaptation of a 40 year old book with a 3.27 rating on Goodreads.epilogue wrote: I mean, there's just it right? He returned in the now Legends novels that everyone craps themselves over and it's totally fine!

You must have missed the entire movement. There were / are millions of them still petitioning for the legends books to be made canon again.
They’re quite serious about it.
