I didn't know anything about it going in other than it was a King story directed by Mike Flanagan starring Hiddleston.

It's so great. Well shot. Well paced. Stellar cast.Full of character and heart. It excels at all the same things the best King adaptations excel at. Sharp themes. Memorable scenes. Relatable and human while also being weird and elevated.

Flanagan really gets King. Like, in his bones.

There's also this awesome sort of meta component that I don't really want to get into because it might spoil stuff for people but it's really clever and heartwarming without being cloying or cringey. Flanagan does some stuff with the casting that mirrors a theme of the film and also plays into a broad theme of King's work overall.

Anyway, I just loved it. I wanted to watch it again immediately.

The first was the best. TG is different than the others, and didn't really appeal to me, so I won't comment on that one. The others lacked the same substance as PB, but his style has a depth all its own.

I can see why Western directors have been influenced by him, or outright stolen from him. Lots of great ideas.

Steamboy. Despite the amazing production values, I could not get into this one at all. Gave up after about an hour. Animation is great, but everything is so washed out and darkly lit, it's kind of a pain to watch.

it was the next movie in some bad horror movie podcast my partner is listening to..

except this was mostly pretty good.

Thirteen Lives. Holy shit I didn't even know this movie existed, or that this real life miracle event even happened. Not usually much of a Ron Howard fan but he does a great job here of simply, accurately depicting what happened. Great movie.

Materialists was weird. It's somehow much deeper than I expected from the trailer and also shallow. It's also weird to know that you're the only person in the theater enjoying yourself in real time --- which isn't a critique of the merits of the film, just a reflection on a personal experience that maybe colored how I perceived the film.

At it's core it's a rom-com with one eye on capitalism and social commentary. The cast are... Fine. I'm a sucker for these kind of stories, so even when they aren't as accomplished or interesting, I still get sucked in and enjoy the experience.

I imagine most people won't like this very much but I can't imagine many people getting angry about it or outright hating it. It's too blah to be offensive to most sensibilities.

But I liked it. Doesn't begin to compare to the brilliance of Past Lives. But I didn't think it's trying to either.
