I was at Lexington 2003 when Eddie and Matt played "I Am a Patriot" to open the first encore. The line "I am a patriot and I love my country" drew out a cheer that drowned out the rest of the line "because my country is all I know". The country was in the midst of "OK 9/11 happened and that's making us feel very American together but also we're not all board with this Iraq thing so that's making us feel very American differently." And Kentucky is a red state with blue cities so that was a layer.
I think looking back on it the most remarkable thing was Eddie didn't take the moment to lecture anyone. He let the art be the art. I appreciate that looking back.
