They wouldn’t show kneecaps set on the live Glastonbury feed in case they may say something about Israel carrying out a genocide.
Bob Vylan was on before them and they did show his set and he went in fully with ‘free Palestine’ and ‘death death to the IDF’ and bbc showed that. Now the bbc are getting it in the neck from the Israeli govt and even Glastonbury’s organisers
So once again, calling out a genocide is wrong and to be closed down and police investigate you criminally if you start such a chant. But if you’re carrying out such a genocide, no investigation whatsoever.
Glastonbury has condemned Bob Vylan after a set branded “deeply offensive” by the BBC.
On Saturday, rapper Bobby Vylan, of rap punk duo Bob Vylan, led crowds on the festival’s West Holts Stage in chants of “Free, free Palestine” and “Death, death to the IDF [Israel Defence League].”

Sometimes people silence you because they're scared of you. But sometimes it's just because you're an asshole.
This whole narrative has so much in common with Trumpism that it's sickening. 1) Be as abrasive and aggressive as possible. 2) Dismiss or even weaponize every ounce of resistance to your behavior as resistance to your politics and beliefs. 3) Become the consummate oppressed living martyr.
A demagogue is a demagogue no matter the political bent.

The Pope indirectly refers to the IDF as an “armed militia” and calls for sanctions and accountability for [Israeli] political elites who “grow fat with impunity.”
Pope Leo XIV v
@Pontifex
We are witnessing with despair the iniquitous use of hunger as a weapon of war. Burning crops, stealing livestock, and blocking aid are tactics increasingly used by armed militias. As civilians languish in misery, political elites grow fat with impunity. It is time to sanction these abuses and hold accountable those who are responsible for it.

Good thing I'm protestant.
In any event, I wasn't speaking about the IDF at all, but rather at the incident outlined in the story I did in fact read before talking bollox. I don't care about that guy's political opinions. I stand by the fact that standing on a stage chanting "death to" any organization when you were not paid to lead a political rally but rather to put on a concert is hardly a strong case for claiming you're persecuted when your views aren't broadcast. Pretty sure festival organizers are interested in making money, not statements, and some whack job chanting "death to" anybody isn't exactly the kind of thing that drives ticket sales.
He stepped outside the box because of his beliefs. Good for him. The people who own the box didn't give him a free pass. Boo hoo.
But also, just for the sake of logical consistency, the IDF would very much be made up of people--unless you expect me to believe he meant to the idea of the IDF and not, you know, the people in the IDF. In which case, his rhetorical choice is puzzling at best.

A company man. Of course you are.
More upset about someone pointing out and calling out an organisation butchering tens of thousands of people than you are about thousands of people being butchered.

I don't know what a company man is and I don't know what Hasbara is. Maybe that's an American vs. Irish disconnect because I also drop a "z" in organizationdimejinky99 wrote:lvc wrote:Good thing I'm protestant.

I never said anything about my level of concern over the situation in Israel/Palestine. I am focusing only on jackass musicians acting like jackasses and using it to stoke their identity as injured champions of justice. I think it's puerile at best and at worst it hints at impulses in themselves just as dark as their worst accusations against the IDF or whatever. I have, after all, read Animal Farm and remember the ending just fine. Also read Jacques Ellul. Also read Hannah Arendt. My general thesis is that if you'd chant "death to [my enemies]", you'd likely act just like your enemies if you had the same access to the mechanisms of power they have.
I find the rhetoric of totalitarianism chilling no matter who's lips it proceeds from.

Re: Israel & Palestine
But look, I read your post about going to the Kneecap show and how meaningful it was to hear native Irish sung by a crowd and found it really moving. Any ethnic/regional roots I have were long since erased by generalized American mass marketing and globalism. (pretty sure I'm descended from the Welsh and knowing the history of Kentucky I have the suspicion that my earliest ancestors were brought over as slaves before trans-atlantic African slavery was really established which would mean my people migrated from the plantations to Appalachia after they were replaced by black slaves where they proceeded to learn nothing from having been slaves themselves.)
I'm just trying to learn the right lessons from history because national identity can be a beautiful thing, but it can also be used to rally people around some truly awful political machines.
And aggressive resistance to injustice/violence can feel really important but it can also turn good people into the same monsters they hate.

The bbc commissioned this documentary. Then Pulled out of showing it. Can’t be annoying the Israeli lobby can we? Not in the middle of their genocide
Channel 4 in the UK took it and have not only shown it but it’s now available to watch on their YouTube. It’s a distressing and upsetting watch. Be warned.
Gaza: Doctors Under Attack, the full documentary is now available on our Channel 4 Documentaries YouTube.

You're an incredibly aggressive person. Anyway, here's the post I was referencing. Perhaps I misinterpreted the bolded section or perhaps you're gaslighting me. Either way, I haven't gathered that you're really here for conversation.dimejinky99 wrote:Im fairly sure I never posted any such thing on here and your entire ramble sounds like a made up nonsense trying to distract from the other point you ran away from and now here again doing the same

Oh god.
It’s meant to be only two hours. Nonstop Dublin to Belfast apart from one stop at Dublin airport.
It stopped at Dublin airport and a load of fuckery ensued with some tourists and their baggage. Yadda yadda blah blah.
With the resuit I missed my girl Gemma Dunleavy playing support. (Up the flats!)
Would have been good to be a Dublin voice in the crowd for her. (There were loads as it turns out.)
Got to see the Gurriers though.
Fuckin incredibly good. They have the songs and the live presence. Watch out for them.
You’re gonna hear them soon and a lot.
Then kneecap.
No words. Blown away. They tore the place apart and the crowd…
9 or 10,000 kids all singing and rapping as gaeilge/in Irish
I was bawling crying for a lot of it. Our people we abandoned and left behind. Please god we get them home soon. Fierce joy and full voice.
They were amazing.
*dunno how that kid moglai bap did this gig his dad dying yesterday. And a Belfast legend and community activist. But very last song they just stuck on Fairytale of New York ‘this is for me Da’ and the crowd took over immediately.
Bawling. One of the most magical gigs I’ve ever been lucky to be at.
** bus home was a fucker cos I fell asleep and got off at Dublin airport by mistake and couldn’t find my wallet and was walking down the motorway when I found it in my top pocket and just got a cab. Sure lookit. These are the things that make it memorable

Now prick is a word that probably means the same thing on both sides of the ocean. Even spelled the same. So I'm definitely tracking with you.
I can only assure you that I don't support anyone anywhere on any stage or platform chanting death to any group of people on account of their political or governmental or ethnic or religious affiliation. Because that would be, you know, a genocidal-type thing to say.
Chanting Death to the IDF? No.
Chanting Death to Hamas? No.
Chanting Death to Israel? No.
Chanting Death to Palestine? No.
Death to totalitarian rhetoric no matter who's saying it? Only metaphorically.
