Re: Matts quit Pearl jam
Im wondering if something else happened. It would be kinda weird because they seemed to be in great terms and Matt seemed to have a very important voice in the band.
If i track this with his comments about not being able to play 3 hours every show, this makes sense. Not wanting to tour every year. Maybe take time with the SG album and tour that album, on another level.

Re: Matts quit Pearl jam
After Taylor died, he mentioned in interviews more than once how grueling/taxing it is on his body these days and how hard drummers work to keep these bands moving. With that along with shorter shows/slower tempos (compred to years prior), its not totally unbelievable that he just doesnt want to be in the big machine anymore.VinylGuy wrote:Im wondering if something else happened. Im super sad and will miss him and his songwriting. Ill be excited for a hopeful fresh start that gives us another new era of PJ.

Maybe this has been in the works for a while, he just wanted to give them a proper DM tourVinylGuy wrote:Im wondering if something else happened. It would be kinda weird because they seemed to be in great terms and Matt seemed to have a very important voice in the band.

This is also just a reminder that this band wont last forever and neither will iStrat wrote:After Taylor died, he mentioned in interviews more than once how grueling/taxing it is on his body these days and how hard drummers work to keep these bands moving. Me and him both...Jorge wrote:Top comment on the band's post:
Matt probably just got tired of all the woke stuff Pearl Jam kept pushing.
This does seem to be the most likely explanation. Drumming is very tough. He's not young. Neil Peart comes to mind.B wrote:I'm pretty sure he quit b/c his hands barely work anymore.wease wrote:Fucking hell. Those Pit idiots are now thinking he quit to join the Foo Fighters.
They should release some kind of 'Lost Dogs 2' album to wrap up and honor the Matt era.wease wrote:I wonder how long ago he brought it to the band. They had reportedly already started a new album...

We joke but I've been worried about it for monthsB wrote:Did we get Matt kicked out of Pearl Jam?
I would certainly hope so.E.H. Ruddock wrote:Maybe this has been in the works for a while, he just wanted to give them a proper DM tour
In any case, some of the best PJ songs are Matt songs. Released ... or otherwise...
He'll be missed .. but PJ could also turn this into an inspired and top notch album. ..They just need to stahp bricking their music in the mix.

Probably nothing worthy of attention but the french Wikipedia page for Matt Cameron says he's been a member of Pearl Jam from 1998 to 2024 and became a member of Devo in 2025. Wth ?

"Final" Matt Cameron perfomance - you can see on the 09:46 mark when they are hanging out with champagne (breakfast) for everyone, they seem very emotional with Matt, hugging and talking with him. Maybe because Chris Cornell death anniversary or maybe because they know about his decision already.

Anyway, sad news. Hoping the best for MC and the band.

I'm almost certain that this didn't come out of left field. I'm sure all things were deliberated and considered.
Perhaps they were gearing up to get going again and the time was right to make it publicly known before the commitments start coming in.
Soundgarden's imminent induction into the HoF also seems like the right thing to wrap on.

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

Agree, very difficult to bring someone into the creative flow at this point, and equally hard to get someone who brings that same sense of five-old-friends camaraderie that the band have had onstage for so long now. That familial vibe is probably their hardest-won career intangible that still reliably exists, that you can still hope to get just by playing one of their records or walking into one of their shows, regardless of how you feel about the songs, the production, Ed's voice, etc. In that regard, I do have some kind of stupid hope that -- if they continue -- it will be with someone who has some history with them already, as opposed to a hired gun.McParadigm wrote:Really shattered, and fully surprised to discover that (in spite of all the drummer stuff over the years) it’ll always feel like an asterisk is next to the band’s name, if they continue with a new drummer. I suppose because it’s too late for someone new to partake in a period of creative growth/exploration along with the guys. They’ll mostly (or entirely) just be the guy sitting in on old songs.
Damn. I hope he’s well and happy.

Honestly zero chance they bring in a hired gun. I just dont see it. 35 years of being a band i think we know them a little...it'll absolutely be someone "in the family" so to speak. Hopefully not klinghoffer lolKevin Davis wrote:Agree, very difficult to bring someone into the creative flow at this point, and equally hard to get someone who brings that same sense of five-old-friends camaraderie that the band have had onstage for so long now. Re: Matts quit Pearl jam
When Bill Berry quite REM (who went on to release 5 more albums without him, one of which is in their top 5 for me), he said he would gut it out if his leaving would break the band up. I wonder how much of that conversation, if any, happened.
Still kind of stunned. But assuming this does not close the book on everything (and I don't think it will) I am excited to see what comes next.
The end of an era that produced a whole lot of music I love.
