Im thinking both Chamberlain and Stuverud have big chances. They work with Stone and Jeff and already played with the band. If i had to choose another one, Barret Martin would be incredible, and he knows Mike a lot.

Jack Irons was a terrible live drummer. *TERRIBLE*

Woah, woah. I agree he was better in studio but the band was in quite a bit of turmoil during his early shows and by the time they were playing Yield songs they all sounded pretty great.given2trade wrote:Jack Irons was a terrible live drummer. *TERRIBLE*

It wasn't the turmoil. He loved playing the "bongo" sound and not enough snare. I aint a drummer but the songs just sounded awful live.Matters wrote:Woah, woah. RIP Jack Irons no disrespect.
Merkinball, No Code, Yield - my favorite Pearl Jam era!
Also RIP Matt Cameron didn't mean to de-rail this thread!
Long live Pearl Jam!

I wasn’t a fan of this either but Jack wore jingle bells around his ankles during his first shows with the band so you know he was dedicated.given2trade wrote: He loved playing the "bongo" sound and not enough snare.

Since they seem to be planning a long hiatus, maybe this is just a marketing ploy to keep the conversation going. Nothing keeps PJ relevant in down cycles like drummer debates.

Re: Matt Cameron quits Pearl Jam
Listening to a little Live on Two Legs right now, thinking how it just feels like yesterday that Matt joined the band and feeling somewhat incredulous at the idea that it has been 27 years since the autumn of sophomore year, when I listened obsessively to this album on the bus on the way home from school. There’s really no telling what PJ would have become had a different drummer stepped in for that ‘98 tour. Very grateful it was Matt, that they went on to have the career they did, and that I got the chance to see that iteration of the band as many times as I did.
Even though I am musically partial to Jack, to me “Pearl Jam” as a group of five dudes will probably always be Ed, Jeff, Stone, Mike, and Matt. In a lot of ways their drummer drama in the ‘90’s was less a string of replacements and more a series of long-form auditions for the one that would finally work.

Re: Matt Cameron quits Pearl Jam
Yeah I agree with the 90s string being auditions. More so personality fit than musical. I think they thought they had found their forever drummer in Jack, so Matt absolutely swooped in and saved the day for Pearl Jam. And vice versa, as Matt was probably bummed about SG ending and wasn’t done with the being in a huge band thing.
The early drummers were girlfriends, Matt was the wife. A marriage that lasted 27 years, and now Pearl Jam enters their weird divorced guy phase. Hooking up with an old flame like Krusen to recapture the glory of their carefree early days makes a lot of sense.

Nothing brings out the best in RM like a death or retirement. I love it.
