I'll say this -- I don't get the sense that bringing in Andrew Watt to produce Dark Matter was an equally democratic decision among all band members, and I do get the sense that his working methods were a shift from how the band have historically worked together to write songs. Maybe he just doesn't enjoy that as much, and isn't excited about the idea of continuing to work that way.

Working in that fashion also means there's limited opportunity for Matt to contribute songwriting ideas compared to the other members (or Watt).

when continuing to work that way means an album every 3-4 years at best, it cant possibly be a drain on his time. especially, again, given how prolific he is. Pearl Jam just doesnt not require (sadly) a major investment of time.

with no insider information i declare, authoritatively, this is about not wanting to have to commit to touring. or just, at this point in his life, deciding he wants the freedom to not do something and not have others impacted by it

I didn't like his sloppy drumming on Animal, it's fascinating for sure, but it's sloppy.
Maybe fit (or not) to PJ overall boring sound.

Here's the thing...It's not as though I'd prefer a world without an active Pearl Jam, obviously, but, all the same, I don't want this to feel like a hastily tacked on coda, either.
It's really tough to do a truly graceful member exit, at this stage.
