I predict a non-permanent replacement, maybe a few guests for recording, and then a drummer for whatever tours they do. Chris Cornell had like 5 drummers record for Euphoria Morning.

The only one on that great list put together by joostone that I would have an active aversion to would be Josh Freeze.

An obviously talented drummer and songwriter, technically astute, but, he'd be the equivalent of Matt Sorum stepping in for Steven Adler in Guns n' Roses.
Power & technique but absolutely no groove or "feel"; a human metronome.

My pick, should the band ask me, would be Matt Chamberlain. He's got the history, the chops, and the feel.

Watching him live with Tori Amos a decade or so back was an absolute treat. Covering for MC in Soundgarden is just the icing on the cake.
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

While I’m sure Dave A. would be great for the fans, I’m against it. He’s very vocal on social media about how he doesn’t understand how he could have been fired. Even if they all agree to make up, that stuff would be sitting in the back of their minds. I feel like there would be too much tension and then we’re just playing “who’s the next drummer” every two years. I don’t want PJ to play into their 80’s with replacement parts and/or as a legacy act. They have to have some idea on how long they want to hero going. Find someone that will be good for the next 5 years or whatever.

yeah, he would be the best fit from that list. Another Matt C.

And especially convenient for everybody with a 'Matt, Mike, Eddie, Jeff, Stone' tattoo

I don't see them hiring a drummer. I don't see them coming back anytime soon. Ed will do his thing and so will the other members. If they do ever come back as group. No idea what it will look like.

Probably, or maybe they started talking about starting a new cycle soon and Matt said, no I cant no more guys.

They could also go the REM route. Just a four piece from now on and add a drummer to the Boom, Klinghoffer line up.

they could also go the rem route and just announce they're done and actually be done. if that was happening now i obviously don't think there'd have been a separate matt announcement, but who knows what will happen in the next few months or couple years - maybe they do try a couple things and just don't feel it and say fuck it. they're in uncharted waters here.

My honest opinion is I don't think they should keep playing hard rock songs anymore, at least Eddie shouldn't. His voice isn't up to the task. And so they might as well break up, unless they want to stick to the more mellow songs. This is a good excuse to call it quits, go solo, you can sing within your range and energy-level that way. But that's just my opinion. If you guys somehow still enjoy hearing him strain his voice like that, more power to you.

He/they should play whatever they want. I find something enduring about still going for it. I don't need them to sound like it's 1998. With that said I think 2024 was a great year for Ed's vocals. It was much better than 2013.

Agreed, and I haven't seen him smoke for some time now. Did he quit?

The idea of them scaling things back and doing primarily shows like Benaroya, Bridge School, etc., would be a dream come true to me, and in theory it would open up a whole new world of potential drummers. I don't expect it to happen, and ultimately agree that they should do whatever they want, but sit-down shows where they do songs like "Off He Goes" and "All Or None" with a drummer that has more of a jazz or country/folk background is something I'd be really excited about.

they could even come up with new mellow, downtuned versions of their heavier songs

They involuntarily man slaughtered someone. No murder involved. Sheesh, Joe.
