Omnium Gatherum is a good one to start with as well because it is one of the few that is a hodge podge of many of their genres. Most of their albums stick to one-ish genre per album, so probably the best to start with is the one that the genre fits best with your taste.Cairn_Away wrote:hell yeah brotherEllo Sailor wrote:Nonagon Infinity, then Polygondwanaland.Cairn_Away wrote:I’ve always wanted to check these fellas out but their catalogue is so overwhelming. I would say Ice, Death… was the first that drew me in, but I was almost instantaneously listening to Onnium Gatherum on repeat.Ello Sailor wrote:Not a bad shout. I'm just sharing how I got hooked on the Gizz.liebzz wrote:Omnium Gatherum

They removed their catalogue from Spotify.
Genuinely a huge bummer.

Re: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard -
I haven’t really changed my mind on this tactic from when Neil Young did the same. By pulling your music, no one is switching services. Instead, you get headlines for your cause for a day and essentially eliminate huge swaths of people from listening to your music because it’s not available to them. I get not supporting businesses that are involved in things that don’t jive with your ethics, but the problem is that if you do that, then you have to basically forego most businesses since the big companies have their hands in something unsavory along the way. Better I think to use the platform to engage with your issues than remove your voice altogether, but I am not looking to open a hornet’s nest. I just think it’s cutting off your nose to spite your face.

That is a pretty standard take.
I think if the band wants to take a principled stand then they should. I support them wholeheartedly.

In the past I would've agreed, but the Gizz leaving Spotify has made me consider paying for another platform. Like, I love Neil Young, but his beef with Spotify was a non-event for me. This holds a lot more weight.

I used to think like liebzz, i mean whats the point when Spotify controls pretty much everything at this point, but its interesting to see younger band doing it.
Even if its not that important for Spotify, i mean you need someone like Tay Tay to actually make a huge shift, its cool that they are doing it.
I might switch at some point too.

They don't want streaming of their music contributing to military research.VinylGuy wrote:whats the point when Spotify controls pretty much everything

Very unlikely to change Ek's mind but at least the band's conscience is clean.

Except that you have to rely on Spotify to hear all their music. What am I going to do, actually buy all 98 of their albums?VinylGuy wrote:yeah, i know the reason, and its very cool they are doing it.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Re: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard -
yeah, thats the tricky thing in terms of how much time are these bands doing it. I guess they still have their music on Tidal or Apple music?
Its seems these dudes can afford it because they manage their music alone and dont make a ton of money with Spotify, so its pretty much the same for them..Still i wonder if all these artists leaving Spotify is something they can do it in a long term situation.

Re: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard -
Neil Young and Joni Mitchell came back after a time. I don’t know if KGLW is planning the same, but it didn’t sound like it.
It’s likely not just about the short term dollars and cents (at least in my estimation) but exposure over the long term. Rather than really get people to bolt Spotify, the more likely outcome is removing a large pool of folks from listening to your music. That might be very little in terms of streaming revenue, but over the long term it can result in the band’s music getting less exposure, which means that everything from concert tickets to merch to everything that actually makes the band profitable reliant on existing fans and folks using services other than Spotify to learn about music that’s out there. That might still be a considerable number of humans, but there’s also a very large amount of people who won’t stumble upon them who would be inclined but for their refusal to have the music on that platform. To that end, they are cutting off their nose to spite their face.
Now, if they want to write a song about the war machine and out Spotify as a source of research funding and make it available for streaming on Spotify, they might have a better chance of making waves and continue to expose folks to their music in the process.

Re: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard -
i agree with that yeah. It happened with me and Neil, even if im a big fan, that i didnt quite listened to his albums because of that. And he needed to go back to it, probably because his label also pushed a bit.
For these guys, they can manage to be outside of Spotify now but i also guess it wont be long term.

As an aside, I have heard every one of their albums and really enjoy the hell out of them and will miss them off the platform.zeb wrote:liebzz wrote:Now, if they want to write a song about the war machine and out Spotify as a source of research funding and make it available for streaming on Spotify, they might have a better chance of making waves and continue to expose folks to their music in the process.

You can upload local files to spotify.. ill prob just put a bunch of mp3s on my phone n make a mix
I think every album is on band camp but I'm not sure if you gotta pay to stream
I'm kinda pissed I didn't go to the Philly show.. not one single person wanted to go but I was gonna go myself.. then I saw it was a orchestra show and humid as hell.. watching the clips it looked kinda neat.. set was heavy on the newest album
