I've concluded after a few listens to this album, We Exist is still my favorite song on it. So many elements to that song that hit me. The strange thing is, it makes me think of Human League.

There are parts of the music in normal person I like (after the ridiculous live intro bit), but the lyrics are another killer here. I said this earlier but I'm bored with Arcade Fire singing songs about how horrible it is to live in a world where not everyone loves Arcade Fire.

You've said this several times now and I don't know what it means. Where is there a song about this? I can't hear it.

I don't understand that, either. I don't really see how those lyrics are meant to be about the band.

edit: Guess I should have kept reading. However, I think the song kind of has the opposite point of what you're saying. I think it's pointing fingers not at how dull a 'normal person' is, but how crazy what being a 'normal person' entails today. It's not the most elegant lyric on that point, but I don't think it's bad, nor is it about those yahoos that don't like Arcade Fire.

there's been some interesting discussion above and beyond that kind of commentary in this thread. enough of it that even i wanted to check this album out - and I don't even know this band at all - but I've listened to it a few times now as a result of the discussions in this thread and I see it as a pretty good album, although i've only listened to it a few times so far- but it's enough for me to say things like

"I think this song is awesome!

Oh my god, I do too, but you know what is even more awesome? This song!

Oh my god, I totally agree!"

and I'm totally a lyric lover in music generally (although admit, so far, I'm just digging on the music itself because that's how i take in new music- music first, then lyrics...)

Honestly, is that really what you think? You think that all of your faux intellectualising about music you clearly don't like or understand is somehow raising the bar for discourse in this thread?

I would much prefer to hear from or interact with people who are emotionally engaged with this band and their music than read more posts from someone who typically regards music as a museum exhibit.

Yup, I am reasonably confident that you mostly want to read posts that like what you like and praise what you want praised. I think that's usually pretty boring and uninteresting. I try not to get irritated by them or embarrassed for you. I don't have to try that hard, though. It's pretty easy to skip posts I don't feel like reading.

And no, I hardly think that I am single handedly raising the bar in this thread. I do think that people actually talking about the songs, exploring what they like and don't like, is vastly more interesting than everyone just cheerleading what they think is awesome.

I don't have any real desire to run a statistical analysis on who said what and how often said people also made a comment complaining that someone doesn't love the album, and this type of comment from you is fairly sub-par, honestly.

zeb makes a better go at explaining than I can, but that's generally what I mean- although I'm not as emotionally invested in this band or album as people who are familiar with them are - but it's a pretty valid assessment to me - you know that you approach your appreciation of music in a far more cerebral manner than many people here, and you know also that many people disagree with this approach.
hell, when I read half your posts in PJ Chat, I sit and scratch my head because I've loved Pearl Jam as much as anyone else here (granted, i don't have the fervor I once had for them, but whatever, I know what I thought of their music) and not once have I ever sat and taken the kind of extreme analytical approach you take about every song you comment on - nor do I agree much of the time.
music to me is feeling it.

If I can get something out of it, I'm pretty good with that.
If I can't, I don't make a point of trying to kick the shit out of everyone else's enthusiasm about it - if people are happy with the music and they express it to each other- does that not hold some value to you along the lines of - that's cool, they obviously enjoy what they're hearing...
that doesn't infringe on your ability to analyze and find shortcomings in the music according to your preferences at all... but your comments suggest that there's something less important about people saying things like:
wow, this is an awesome song!

to me, that's a pretty cool comment because they like it enough to want to share that enthusiasm...
