Yeah, he's got a touch of Freddie Mercury in his vocals. He's got some really great aggressive vocals on each record, but even then he might not be growly enough for your tastes...

I like Tim booth from James an awful lot, but I guess he also has that cracked low end.

The girls just woke up. I'll listen later though

How to Make Gravy is much more than just a christmas song. It's a perfect slice of normal life, longing and want, happiness and regret, all tied up in 5 minutes of exceptional story telling. It's a song that I've heard at least 200 times and yet will still evoke real physical emotion from me if I happen to be alone when I hear it.

John Butler described it thus, and I can't do better:

I just reacquainted myself with the lyrics online and I have to say it brought tears to my eyes again. What a wordsmith! This song is the perfect example of what we as artists try to do – to explain and convey the very emotion and feeling of a situation and setting in just a few words. It is an art and there is something divine about the process, and Paul has that gift. This song is steeped in modern Australian culture. How is it that I feel like I know Dan, Rita, Frank, Dolly and the kids? I can smell the roast and see the cars parked in the front yard. The stubby holders, piles of wrapping paper, the heat rippling up from the road and the camaraderie in the busy kitchen. I’ve been at that Christmas … or have I? Either way, after hearing, feeling, experiencing that song, I have now.

I actually doubt that you'd like it regardless stip, just guaging the general feel I get for your tastes. I'm pretty sure you won't like Paul Kelly's voice and I suspect that the intrinsic and basic "straylianism" of it might not resonate with you, but you never know. If you do give it a bash the album version is what you want to listen to.

How to Make Gravy is not a traditional Christmas song. It is a great nomination and while it may not match Pearl Jam's best in many ways it is a truly incredible song

I've never heard a better song than my favourite songs by Pearl Jam (of which Corduroy is my favourite).

I'm a fan of a lot of Mogwai's stuff but they don't have a horse in this race. Having said that Auto Rock is a cracker and is more representative of the side of the band that I most appreciate (as compared to Batcat).

<edit> and cheers for giving How to Make Gravy a listen stip. It is good, isn't it?

you're right that the singer is my thing (I don't have a problem with meandering songs like that, though), but the story is pretty touching.
