Anders, I had the pleasure of visiting Oscarsborg Fortress last summer. It was incredible to think of the people further up Oslofjord hearing the explosions during the night, absolutely chilling.

The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, at 8:15 AM Japan Standard Time (JST), which was August 5, 1945, at 7:15 PM Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), and August 6, 1945, at 1:15 AM Central European Time (CET).

The atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, at 11:02 AM JST (Japan Standard Time) on August 9, 1945. This translates to 4:02 AM CET (Central European Time). In US time, it was 10:02 PM EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) on August 8th, as the US was using Daylight Saving Time at the time.

The Japanese surrender, marking the end of World War II, was announced on August 14, 1945, in the United States, and on August 15, 1945, in Japan and much of the rest of the world. In the US, President Truman announced the surrender at 7:00 PM EDT on August 14th. This announcement was made on August 14th due to the International Date Line; in Japan, it was already August 15th. In Europe, including the UK, the announcement was made on August 15th after midnight GMT.

In 2025, the 80th anniversary of V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day) will be marked on September 2nd, according to historical records and resources. This day commemorates the formal surrender of Japan, which officially ended World War II. The surrender was signed on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. While August 15th is also recognized as V-J Day in some countries, particularly in the UK, the 2nd of September is the date that marks the formal end of the war.

The Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed on September 2, 1945, at 9:04 AM local time in Tokyo Bay. This translates to 9:04 AM JST (Japan Standard Time). In Central European Time (CET), it was 2:04 AM. In US Eastern Time (ET), it was 8:04 PM on September 1st.

I don't understand how Japan went from being 7 hours ahead of CET on August 6th (I assume your reference to it being August 5th in Europe for the Hiroshima bombing is a typo), to 8 hours ahead on August 9th with the bombing of Nagasaki, and then back to 7 hours ahead on September 2nd with the signing of the surrender. Make sense of this for me Anders.

August 6th and seven hours is correct. I didn’t write those times myself, but have edited them now.

Thought about how there will be less WW2 anniversaries going forward, and with fewer living veterans. However, going back 90 and 100 years, even now, there are events that shaped the war to come.
Spoiler: show
Asked ai:

85th Anniversary:
While not as widely publicized as the 80th, the 85th anniversary will likely see some form of remembrance, potentially at a national or local level, focusing on specific events of the war.

90th Anniversary:
As the 90th anniversary approaches, there may be increased attention, especially if it coincides with significant milestones or anniversaries of specific battles or events.

95th Anniversary:
Similar to the 85th, the 95th anniversary may see some commemoration, but it's likely to be less extensive than the 90th or the 100th.

100th Anniversary:
The 100th anniversary of World War II will undoubtedly be a major international event. The National WWII Museum reported that the 50th anniversary was marked with a major commemoration, and the 100th will likely be even more significant, possibly involving global leaders, large-scale events, and educational initiatives.

Wow a lot of insight from AI. "There will likely be anniversaries commemorated in increments of five years"

I think 85th and 95th anniversaries are not usually celebrated in a major way for historical events. The 90th will be like the 80th has been, and the 100th will be a major event, like the ai predicted as well. But for the war itself, that won’t start until 2039.

1925: July 18 - Hitler's autobiographical manifesto Mein Kampf is published.

1935: September 15 - The Reichstag passes the Nuremberg Laws, institutionalizing discrimination against Jews and providing the legal framework for the systematic persecution of Jews in Germany.

Examples of events from 100 and 90 years ago.

I have probably posted this already, but I’ve been following the 80th anniversary of WW2 for years now. For the 75th anniversary of the end (five years ago now), I watched a large selection of WW2 movies.
