I usually attack Expedia, Kayak, and Cheapoair

Very rarely I'll do it through the airline's website

If you are a frequent flyer with status on a specific airline, and you don’t book through them, you are less likely to get upgraded if someone with the same status as you booked through the airline.

The use of the word “status” twice in one sentence really cultivates a douchey status.

Also,

Status, status.

What song is that from?

it's also a shitshow getting a hold of anyone when you book through expedia, etc. they'll tell you to contact the airline, and the airline will tell you vice versa.

I had to modify a trip at the last minute, when it was technically non-refundable or changeable, but was able to do so without losing any money because I booked direct through the airline and hotel. Also when I ask chat gpt 99% of the time it tells me the cheapest flights are from the airline websites.

At least with international travel, I've done a lot of direct comparisons with the airline website and in the overwhelming majority of cases the same trip has been cheaper on those aggregator sites, though you sometimes have to do some digging.

I'll grant that it's easier to make changes when you deal with the airline directly, but I travel fairly frequently and that's never really been a problem for me.

When traveling domestically within the US I do buy directly from the airline (American Airlines) because I'm part of their AAdvantage loyalty program and use the points

I haven’t flown international except for work since chat gpt was invented, so yeah that’s probably the difference

When you guys travel, do you book your maids on the same airline as you or make them travel separately?
