there's been some interesting discussion above and beyond that kind of commentary in this thread. enough of it that even i wanted to check this album out - and I don't even know this band at all - but I've listened to it a few times now as a result of the discussions in this thread and I see it as a pretty good album, although i've only listened to it a few times so far- but it's enough for me to say things like

"I think this song is awesome!

Oh my god, I do too, but you know what is even more awesome? This song!

Oh my god, I totally agree!"

and I'm totally a lyric lover in music generally (although admit, so far, I'm just digging on the music itself because that's how i take in new music- music first, then lyrics...)
there has. Was it provided by the people who are complaining that someone who doesn't love the album is talking about it?
I don't have any real desire to run a statistical analysis on who said what and how often said people also made a comment complaining that someone doesn't love the album, and this type of comment from you is fairly sub-par, honestly.
It is. I'll have to beg your forgiveness. I only feel like reading so many posts telling me I'm embarrassing myself before I don't feel like ignoring it anymore. But I always feel dirty after I respond.
malice wrote: zeb makes a better go at explaining than I can, but that's generally what I mean- although I'm not as emotionally invested in this band or album as people who are familiar with them are - but it's a pretty valid assessment to me - you know that you approach your appreciation of music in a far more cerebral manner than many people here, and you know also that many people disagree with this approach.
And that's pretty fucking stupid. What is there to disagree with about how someone listens to music?

I listen to music pretty much the same way everyone else here does. I may talk about it in a more 'cerebral' (although I think we're really lowering the bar with what counts as cerebral here) manner, but that's really just trying to figure out why I like something or I don't.
malice wrote: hell, when I read half your posts in PJ Chat, I sit and scratch my head because I've loved Pearl Jam as much as anyone else here (granted, i don't have the fervor I once had for them, but whatever, I know what I thought of their music) and not once have I ever sat and taken the kind of extreme analytical approach you take about every song you comment on - nor do I agree much of the time.
music to me is feeling it.
To me too, but I only want to talk about feelings for so long before I'd rather start to talk about why I feel that way.
malice wrote: If I can get something out of it, I'm pretty good with that.
If I can't, I don't make a point of trying to kick the shit out of everyone else's enthusiasm about it - if people are happy with the music and they express it to each other- does that not hold some value to you along the lines of - that's cool, they obviously enjoy what they're hearing...
A: I'd encourage you to do a search for just about everything you've said about Lightning Bolt
B: I have not made any 'you are an idiot for liking this stuff' posts. That's garbage posting. Talking about what does and does not work for you in a song is called talking about music.

And look, you've read the shit I've written in pearl jam chat, or about band's I am invested in. I don't think anything I've done in this thread is particularly cerebral or demanding. I don't know this music or band well enough for that.

Arcade fire is a band that in theory plays to many of my musical interests. I should like them more than I do. Occasionally they pop out a song I genuinely love. They're a really intriguing band to me because I don't like them as much as I'd expect to. And so I'm interested in trying to figure out why that is and maybe, in the process, get turned on to more of their music.
malice wrote: that doesn't infringe on your ability to analyze and find shortcomings in the music according to your preferences at all... but your comments suggest that there's something less important about people saying things like:
wow, this is an awesome song!

to me, that's a pretty cool comment because they like it enough to want to share that enthusiasm...

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that. I don't feel like doing any homework on this, but go back and read just about every post directed at me by Zeb, Soma, Rafa, and probably one or two others if you want some context for the comment.

Talk of lyrical interpretation and the value they add or detract from a song is great. I just find it frustrating in this case to read yours about this album because you seem to have made up your mind on them from first blush about them being about Arcade Fire talking about themselves and how misunderstood they are while no one else hears it. That coupled with your past defense of the lyrics in the song by Pearl Jam called "The Fixer" pushed me to hit submit on that post.

Also, I'd be the first to admit that I bring next to nothing to the table at these forums in the way of worthwhile discourse anymore if not ever. But I still lurk around these parts once in awhile, particularly in OB and it's definitely not for the "I think this song is awesome!", "Oh my god, I do too, but you know what is even more awesome? This song!" and "Oh my god, I totally agree!" posts.

I guess I just found the sheer volume of posts from the Stip account in this thread odd given the tone and opinions expressed in the first dozen or so made during your first listen. *shrugs*

harmless and I had a whole conversation about that, and whether or not there were other possible interpretations I missed. I found it interesting. that's how you learn stuff.

also, based on past posts in this thread, it is entirely possible harmless and I are the only two people who actually listened to the lyrics in the first place.

LOL and based on the fathers day card I got from my girls this year I'm the #1 dad in all the land.

I'm sorry I called you out on the number of posts you've made in here, man. I'm not offended that you don't love this album or the band for that matter. I have no stake in them other than I happen to really enjoy their music. :peace:

A: I'd encourage you to do a search for just about everything you've said about Lightning Bolt

forgive me for being so thoroughly disappointed by my musical heroes of the last 20 years that I feel a need to vent my frustration about it here in a sardonic manner. I've kept my comments fairly tame, actually.
Lightning Bolt as an album is not what Pearl Jam ever was for me. yet I haven't ranted about it other than a couple comments in GD to d rr and harmless as to why I'm disappointed, know why? because I don't get much out of arguing that they've disappointed me, personally. and don't get much out of trying to make sure everyone else stops enjoying it due to my disappointment.
I'm fairly certain I'm capable of being as big an asshole here if not bigger than most people here, so I encourage you to search out some of my rants in the archived board to witness the sheer volume of intensity I'm given to expressing about some point or another to be sure everyone knows what a dick I truly am when I put my mind to it...

how horrible am I for wanting Pearl Jam to express what they consistently did over the first 15 years of their career... passion and enough personal integrity to not succumb to the ease and comforts afforded them (mainly ed, in my mind) as big stars who are happy and rich now - they were exclusively responsible for articulating my generational experience in my 20s, and for that I love them still.
terrible of me to think they were genuinely capable of still doing as much of that in their late 40s as their late 20s.

but definitely turn this into a who's a bigger dick than who pissing contest if you want, I'm a pretty big dick, so I can only guess I win in that respect...

Arcade fire wouldn't be a band I go to for lyrical genius.
I'm not even sure they're lyrics mean anything except for a final splash of colour over the front.

This whole discussion has kinda put me off listening to this again. I might wait until nobody gives a fuck whether Arcade Fire are 1) hipster-fakesters with shitty lyrics or 2) God's gift to the tradition of experimental rock.

there was nothing else to say. You said people shouldn't make posts that are expressing dislike of an album other people are enjoying.

The implication here was that this was exactly what I was doing with AF. I pointed out that almost 100% of everything you've said about a new pearl jam album on a forum ostensibly dedicated to that band was trashing it, usually in a pretty disrespectful way, and rarely in a way that seemed intended to provoke conversation. It was shit taking, and sometimes implied (or was part of a conversation that implied) that people who liked it were kinda stupid for doing so, or had shitty taste, etc. On the other hand, most of my talk of Reflektor was really about what I specifically liked and didn't like or was part of a conversation with other people about the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the song writing.

To which you basically responded: I liked pearl jam for a long time and therefore have earned the right to bitch about it (fine) and this forum is lucky I didn't bitch about it more (hooray?)

I really haven't got much more to add to that. Other than the fact that I wish I didn't feel compelled to respond to this crap.
