Re: The Sopranos, Deadwood, The Wire, Mad Men
Crazy Mad Men story:
Playing pickleball today with my best bud from work. We’ve been friends for over 15 years now. As we’re warming up, I mention that my wife and I are watching Mad Men. He goes, “I went to school with a guy on that show.” I’m surprised this has never come up, but I’m completely blown away when he goes, “I think he played someone named Campbell? Anyway, his name is Vincent Kartheiser.”
I had questions. Same grade? Yup. Then he goes, I remember when Nirvana’s unplugged was playing on the radio here in its entirely and we sat in class each with one ear bud listening.
So my big question was, “You went to school with and knew a kid who was on Mad Men and you’ve never watched it?” He goes, “Well, we weren’t close or anything. He left in like 10th grade. I remember one day he came in so excited because he got a line in a Christian Slater movies called Untamed Heart. I think that was his first gig.”
I don’t know, maybe it’s not a crazy story, but it kind of floored me.

(please note that Vincent Kartheiser is not as balding as Pete Campbell)

I had seen the Tony Soprano/Uncle Ben’s memes, and I thought that surely he didn’t pass out right after looking in his cabinet and cussing out his daughter’s black friend, maybe someone cut it that way to make it look funny? But now I’ve seen it and here we are.

That’s true. Mad Men is the only show that I still watch on DVD.bart wrote:Mad Men’s lack of availability on anything but the terrible AMC+ app has really taken it off the radar for most people

There’s something eerily familiar about some of the settings in this show, specifically places like Uncle June’s house and the Soprano’s old house. They’re spot on for places bought right after WW2 and then never renovated even into the next century. They’re spot look just like my grandparents’ house, and in one scene Uncle June is drinking out of a glass that I swear my family had.

I’m not going to stop watching Mad Men, but I must confess I am hate-watching it. We’re in season 3 and Don is fucking Sally’s teacher. Pete basically just raped some poor German girl after helping her get a dress. Sal got fired for not getting raped. Betty Draper is having a dry hump affair and just found Don’s box of Dick Whitman bullshit. Peggy fucked Buck. I hate everybody.

I’ve gotta say, in season 4 of The Sopranos, when they go and visit the weird hitmen in Rhode Island, I really appreciated the local flavor.

I get such bad anxiety whenever someone on The Sopranos makes a bad decision that is obviously going to snowball. Watching the episode now where Furio calls Carmela. What are you doing, man?

I have subtitles on most of the time, and sometimes they put Furrio’s accent in the text. “I keep-a the car running.”

what's your top ten, bart?bart wrote:Finished watching the Sopranos all the way through for the first time since it was on tv (well, since it came out on dvd). God I fucking hate AJ. I realize he’s basically just Tony’s self pity and narcissism in its purest form but my god it’s hard to tolerate him on screen.
Overall I still rank the show very high, but not the absolute best show of all time and probably not in the top ten. Edie Falco’s performance is possibly the best ever on a tv show, though

Hmm. Just off the top of my head I’d say:
Mad Men
Star Trek TOS
True Detective if I can only include the first season
Arrested Development
MST3k
I Think You Should Leave
The Office (US)
Neon Genesis Evangelion
The Twilight Zone
The Simpsons (obviously not including the last 25 years)
