What did I miss?!

well, i thought it was beautifully shot and edited. And the cast was superb too, it had moments of tension very well done and a great and funny af ending

i also liked
Spoiler: show
that idea of kids being weaponized, and adults not even talking to each other about it.
The characters were realistic, well-rounded, superbly acted. The story was batshit crazy yet maintained a level of necessary grounding thanks to the characters. I was zeroed in from start to finish. Maybe it helps to be a parent or to have children you care for, I dunno. I loved each character and when something horrible happens to them I actually very much cared. It had everything; laugh out loud comedy, horror, mystery, suspense, drama, creativity, great camera work and sound design. I loved everything about it and can't wait to see it again.
All of that is cool, but the hype around this thing lead me to believe there was some deeper meaning or huge creative swing or twist or ... I don't know... something that elevated it beyond other horror films. Even the stuff you describe above isn't "groundbreaking." It's just a really good example of a genre movie. And I think this movie is exactly that, nothing more.

There was also some stuff that bugged me (mostly with Brolin's arc). But not much more than any other similar type of horror film.

Apparently every character is a version of him and how he handled the grief of the death of a friend. Except for that child character who represents what it felt like for him as a child to have alcoholic parents. By him I'm referring to the writer director. He says it is a very personal film. It felt personal for me too

The more I sit with this I think I'm realizing that it just isn't entertaining in a way that I was wanting or expecting. I think the movie is actually pretty brilliant and I think I will watch it again soon. There is a lot of symbolism to digest. Feels similar to a clockwork Orange. it holds a mirror to our most messed up degenerative aspects of our society. Not fun but extremely fascinating. Will probably age really well and eventually be considered a classic

Let's all agree to call Argo "Fargo" from now on.

"elevated horror" movies tend to be my favourite horror movies, but what people have to understand is that "elevated horror" stories have existed since Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein; horror is founded upon social commentary

Exactly!

It's the social commentary that I feel like I'm missing from Weapons. Which is why I feel like an idiot.
