Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

I saw them this summer and they are not. Their lead singer is dreamy and they put on a great show.

I love that this answer presupposes that to qualify as nu-metal you need to be a bad live band and also ugly

The sentences were not meant to be connected. I’ve seen Limp Bizkit. Also great show. Not as dreamy tho.

how would you define nu metal in such a way as to exclude 311

I wouldn’t define 311 as any kind of metal.

When I think of nu metal, Korn, linkin Park, limp bizkit, and soad are the first bands that come to mind. I think of 311 as more of a ska/pop punk vibe more consistent with sublime, Goldfinger, and yellowcard.

Kinda. Early on they were definitely fratbro-funk with hints of chugga chugga. Which is about as close to nu-metal as you can get without "being" nu-metal.

The chorus gives me strong nu-metal vibes. Also, I kind of like it??
