The xeno carapace is strong, but not impenetrable. We have seen them downed multiple times over the years. But yeah, I think the fight could have been framed better. Wendy was technically "killed" via a head shot (a tail-stab* to the back of the head, perhaps?) but no other visible injuries was a bit odd.
Ah well, the rule of cool and all that.
*The xeno could've easily killed Wendy or Joe with its tail in the melee leading up to being shut in the cargo elevator. Joe especially has enjoyed a bunch of plot armor already. I know that xenos will behave differently when they're trying to "safely" capture a host vs. annihilate every perceived threat in sight, but still.
