Just took some benadryl so I can't wait to fall asleep in the middle of writing an email for work in about an hour.

Haha. I thought I was responding to a nonexistent Ruddo response to my Benadryl comment.spike wrote:i've never heard retirement described in this manner. interesting.wease wrote:It wires me up. Parents visiting for a long weekend starting tomorrow, along with my 16-year-old brother. Hoping like hell for a good visit but these often wear out quickly. I really wish only my parents would come without my brother, but they always bring him and it's always a downer.

Is that just because you don't get along? Or just don't have anything in common with him? I feel like you talked about him before, but sorry I can't remember exactly.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Parents visiting for a long weekend starting tomorrow, along with my 16-year-old brother. He barely ever speaks. Has been that way since I've known him, though I almost never see him. He acts like a 10-year-old still. Seeing him around my parents also stirs up complicated feelings from my own upbringing. It's just a drag and I wish I could hang out with my parents without all the weirdness it brings.E.H. My relationships with both of my brothers are a mess. Had to go no-contact with my 32-year-old brother earlier this year when enough was finally enough. I doubt we'll ever speak to each other again (him threatening to murder me pretty much sealed the deal).

Re: Talk about your day thread
i have a slightly different but somewhat similar familial scenario and pursue one of two options depending on the circumstances:
1) extreme sobriety, and avoidance - remaining active, jumping quickly out of unwanted conversations to go 'tend to something', having unexpected errands to run, etc. overall you can attempt to shrink the amount of time of actual interaction and communication to like 15 minutes, and load up your schedule with anything that comes to mind that suddenly becomes time-sensitive (and then the clock expires) - downside: you won't get to spend as much time with your parents. upside: you avoid having others world view / latest sorrow story / leaching hands stuffed all up in your business
2) extreme drunkenness, and indifference - begin the interaction already at least 6-8 beers deep. seek a steady continued pace such that by nightfall you have reached about 14-16 beers. nothing anyone does will really matter, you can just tune them out to their faces, nodding and saying occasional platitudes here and there, and just focusing on drinking. downside: probably a hangover the next day. upside: you drank 14 beers and dgaf about other people's stupid shit

Re: Talk about your day thread
My building's superintendent and I got in a weird debate today about the notices they posted about how the water was gonna be shut off "from 10 AM to 12 AM" for repairs.
Me: "So no water all day?"
Super: "Read the notice! It'll be back at noon."
Me: "Oh! There's a typo in the notice, I guess. Should say 12 PM"
Super: "There's no typo. 12 PM would be midnight. 12 AM is noon."
Me: "That's incorrect, but thanks for the info."
Super: (very annoyed) "How is it incorrect?!"
Me: "You have it backwards. 12 PM means noon, 12 AM is midnight."
Super: "How can it be midnight if it's in the morning?"
Me: (struggling to find the words to explain) "Well because... I mean, it's... uhh"
Super: "Ah, you see? OK, I have things to do now." (leaves)

I would need to find someone else to tell him to prove my point. Not sure how you can sleep until you know he knows you were right

To avoid these sort of misunderstandings I will always go with 12:01pm. Added advantage is it makes me look ridiculously efficient.Jorge wrote:My building's superintendent and I got in a weird debate today about the notices they posted about how the water was gonna be shut off "from 10 AM to 12 AM" for repairs.
