Here let me just make up a wild hypothetical example: Young girl murdered on subway train by career criminal and bystanders do nothing. Gee I wonder if it has ANYTHING to do with the last time someone intervened in a situation like this, he was arrested for it because racist racist racist.

Some in this very thread!

Kirk said many things I did not agree with or condone, but having the strength of will to not kill people for saying things we don't agree with or condone -- even when those disagreements are divisive and severe -- seems like pretty bare minimum-level T&C for living in a democratic society that holds up free speech as a core value. I'm really not sure what people who think this kind of violence is justified think the endgame is -- things like this never get better before they get way, way worse, and from a purely practical standpoint, it seems like it would be pretty unwise for Democrats to suddenly decide, after 2-3 decades of telling their people that guns are bad and no one should own them, to engage Republicans in some kind of contest that involves shooting people over political and cultural disagreements.

"They go low, we go high" seems like an eternity ago. The commitment that people on both sides have to climbing atop high horses and trumpeting their moral superiority, only to repeatedly prove that they're willing to be every bit as petty and nasty as the opponents they demonize (while simultaneously having the gall to act surprised when nothing ever gets any better) is truly mind-boggling. It’s like a fucking Chinese finger trap at this point and it is so incredibly sad — all of it.

like being in a car with a kidnapper and you're making pleasant small talk so they don't freak out but really you're just trying to wait for the car to stop so you can open the door and roll out

he def caught me in at least one wincing face twitch

they just volunteer these comments because of my demographics
