I respect this. Totally subjective and I get why some people don’t like him.

I just saw him again this weekend. He did an hour and change. Throughout his sets he always has 15-20 minutes of just hack shit - fart jokes or dumb shit that is meant to shock with no point. But if you could cut that out, he consistently does 45 minutes of funny, insightful, and frequently profound material that no one else touches. Imo.

I’m all over the map with comedy:
I’ve seen both Seinfeld and Gervais decades ago and in the last 3 years. I think they have both gotten better with age. I think they both study and research. They work hard offstage.

Chappelle is the best orator of my lifetime, but his decade long foray into trans bashing was disappointing. He doesn’t need to be funny for me to listen to him, though.

Used to love Bill Burr, and he’s still a great interview, but he’s always yelling at paper tigers now.

Gillis might have peaked early with Beuatiful Dogs. i saw him on his current tour and he’s recycling shit already.

Bargatze has been up his own ass for a couple years now. I love him, but he needs to go away for a bit. His best hope of being great again is his daughter becoming a teenager. He is being given too much credit, though. Ray Romano was a brilliant clean comic covering similar ground 25 years ago.

The comic I’m most intrigued by these days is Jeff Arcuri- you’ve seen him on til tok or reels. Pure crowd work. So likable. I hope to see him soon, but I wish I had seen him before he got too big for clubs.

he used to be. Then he jerked off in front of unsuspecting women. And his prior stuff hasnt aged well. He's not that funny.
I can also understand this perspective. He abused his power. Unfortunately for him, this happened at the height of the #metoo movement and his name was lumped in with Weinstein and Cosby.

I think if people were honest with themselves they’d recognize that they have probably excused this sort of behavior with cooler, better looking famous people. I watched all the VH1 Behind the Musics back in the 90s. Musicians abusing their positions of power was always glorified - was it Def Leppard who legendarily banged mother/daughter duos beneath the stage before encores? Motley Crue’s Dirt bio is fucking disgusting, but people love those stories.

Louis is fat, ginger, and has a weird fetish. He was exposed and admitted it. He was my favorite comedian so I was disappointed, but I have loved him since the mid-90s. If my children did something awful, I’d still love them. I think the public shaming and relatively short-term canceling were penance enough publicly for what he did. He’s certainly daily dealing with trying to look his daughters in their eyes. That’s a life sentence. I’m glad his comedy’s tone hasn’t changed. Anything else would be disingenuous.

Is he a douche? For sure. Most people, myself firmly included, are. But I also think he’s very thoughtful and self-aware. I think most people falsely think they’re good people. I don’t think he thinks he’s a good person. I’d guess he probably genuinely hates himself. But no one outside of people I know personally have made me laugh as much as him.

Good posts, but you're insane if you think Gervais has gotten better with age. He fucking sucks now. "Someone called me a prick and I was like, hang on, show me your mansion ha ha ha".

Absolute dreck. I'm sorry, but I do think a little bit less of you for that take.

“Victims”

I think most women involved in sexual acts outside of long-term relationships are victims to some degree. How often is the first act their idea? How often do they feel compelled by something other than a deep connection? How often is their bean-like hemorrhoid openly discussed on a Pearl Jam message board without their consent?

He has some bad material, but he is a much better standup now. I don’t even think it’s arguable. I was at the Out of England 2 special taping in Chicago. Great storyteller, but out of his depth as a standup. Saw him again 2 or 3 years ago in Montreal. His command of the medium has improved a ton. The overall material was better, too. Plus, much of his earlier best stuff was plagiarized from conversations with my avatar. Now he’s truly on his own.

This is like that "people who go to work before the sun comes up" post where I keep reading it to try and understand but the point keeps slipping from my soapy grip

I strongly disagree with all of this, but it is what it is.
